A Love Song For My Bench Press....

Next week will be my two month marker for the day I decided to change my lifestyle and I have a confession.... I'm in love with the bench press. While I've seen good weight loss, the mirror is a completely different person. I hope my husband doesn't mind my affair :). I find it difficult not to want to be out there every day. Right now, I do 5-10 sets of 10 bench, squats and deadlifts every other day. Opinions on frequency? If I'm not too sore is it okay to do more (not hurting but just a little achy).

I think frequency is ok, but if you can do 5-10 sets of 10 reps, I'd up the weights and lower the sets, personally.

I agree too! That'll make me happy. I told my husband my goal right now is to be able to deadlift him *evil laugh*

I'd suggest mixing in some overhead pressing too, since that helps balance out the bench press. Too much bench pressing without overhead pressing can lead to shoulder problems.

I'd also agree, fewer reps and sets, heavier weights. Starting Strength (my new bible) suggest 3 sets of 5 reps, and add weight to the bar each workout. Also, read Starting Strength, if you haven't already.

Oh, and alternate bench and overhead pressing. Yes, that means you can only bench every other workout, just think of it as a long-distance relationship :)

I can see me now...staring longingly at my bench press... but thank you for advice! My brother in law left it in our garage because he couldn't fit it at his new place. Started with just the bar and now at 55 lbs. I will look into Starting Strength.

You might want to check out the program that's outlined here:

Some of what you've been doing and a bit more, plus some built-in structure to help you progress. There's also an MFP group where some folks following the program "hang out."
