I absolutely love cardio but have not done strength training since I was a teenager. Is it necessary and what happens if I omit strength training all together.

Strength training will build more muscle, which in turn aids in burning more calories. In addition to that, when you do lose fat, what is revealed will look a lot better.

If you omit strength training, then you won't get strong.

Strength training reduces the amount of muscle loss while on a caloric deficit.

You don't have to do strength training if you don't want to. Losing muscle sucks. Adding muscle is far more difficult than losing weight.

After you pass the age of 50, if you omit strength training you will gradually deteriorate until you are riding the moterized cart in Walmart.

What should I start at if I am not a member of a gym. Push-ups, crunches or what

If you don't want to buy a weight set, or join a gym, look up "You are your own gym." Otherwise, you can pick up some weights pretty cheaply on craigslist or something like that. Pick up a couple dumbbells, some weight plates, and a bench. You can do a lot with just those.

If you don't have access to equipment, check out a progress bodyweight program or get some resistance bands. Nerdfitness.com is a good resource. A lot of people on here recommend Convict Conditioning and You Are Your Own Gym as well.

I love Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred and Ripped in 30. These combine cardio and strength training; the key will be to use weights that are heavy enough and to set goals and push yourself. I began as a total weakling, using 3lb weights and modifying every move. Over time, I have pushed and pushed and now use between 10-25 lbs (depending on the exercise) and can do the moves without modifications. I am stronger, leaner and infinitely more fit.

You can buy free weights and a mat; that's all you need. Good luck!

^^^^ Scott's not exaggerating. Starting at age 40 most men start losing about 1% of their lean muscle mass per year if they don't strength train. At age 60 the rate of loss accelerates.....

Body weight exercises are a great start (check out a book called You Are Your Own Gym - available on amazon.ca) but at some point you will probably want to add at least some resistance equipment. I'm 57 and have to work twice as hard to get half the results but I try to get 2 or 3 strength session in per week (I'm primarily a runner) - it makes a huge difference in how you feel (even if you don't end up looking like Arnold) and, hopefully, will mean that I'm not one of those fail old guys you see shuffling around the mall when I'm 80.

    Here's a little reading.....

keep up the cardio (you have look after the old ticker) but add some strength, you'll be glad you did.

Get a pull-up bar. You can start by aiding yourself with your feet on a chair. Pull-ups and Push-ups are both excellent exercises that use multiple muscles.
