Potassium levels

Anyone else low in MFP for their Potassium levels? Without going overboard I am not sure how to handle this if I should be concerned. I do take blood pressure medicine daily. Any thoughts?

I think relying on MFP for a potassium read will consistently result in an undermeasurement. MFP's data ultimately comes from food labels (either directly from manufacturer, or from users entering from package label). In the U.S., potassium levels are not consistently included on package labels.

I for one frequently see foods in my diary showing a potassium level of 0 or "n/a" that I know have >100 mg of potassium per serving. So.

If you are on medication, your doctor is making you take blood tests at least once a year, and she or he will get a take on your blood potassium from there. Ask your doctor if you should be concerned, bring a typical week's worth of food logs to discuss. Some (but not all) BP medications also tend to increase your body's uptake of potassium, meaning a patient can get by with less than the recommended dose of potassium and is strongly urged NOT to take potassium supplements. I know that Losartan is one such medication.

All that being said, if you don't believe any of this, I find that eating potatoes raises my potassium a ton -- way more than bananas.

Thanks for the information! I will be getting my yearly blood work in the next couple of months. Until then I will make sure to eat bananas
