What is Crossfit? How do you do it? Is it a program you buy (like Insanity, P90X)?

Cross fit is just a name. It's a style of working out that includes heavy lifting, interval training, gymnastics and a variety of other little things that people seem to suddenly think are ONLY cross fit.
It's interval training- and oly lifting- with some gymnastic stuff in there (ring work/rope work etc).
it is not a "program" you can purchase- you can check any website for a WOD- work out of the day.
If you would like you can pay lots of money to go to a "box" which is a cross fit gym. The nice thing is they tend to think outside the box (they have made tire flipping, burpees and muscle ups very popular now) sledge hammar to the tire type things are seen- very popular with deployed troups because they sometimes don't have access to full gyms but only things like sand bags and dead tires LOL.
It's a thing. It's a good thing. It's a bad thing. It just is a thing. You can do many of their workouts without ever stepping foot in a box- but the box is an intense place to work out and it can be very fun- being around like minded people.
There is a lot of "over train- to much people get injuried" commentary that goes around- but I think that's actually due to the group mentality not something cross fit itself pushes- they want you to train hard and be intense- but not injuried (can't spend money if you are injuried) but it happens. Lots of to much to fast- to heavy.
At a box you get good coaching (in theory) and it's part of why the tag is so high.
Some people love it some people hate it.
People ask me all the time if I do Cross Fit- I refuse to say so because I dislike some of the things I hear and I'm not affilitated with them at all. But I do do Crossfit style workouts- and have done actual WOD's straight off their site- I don't care.
it's all working out to me- train hard... that's all I care about.
Give it a shot see if you like it.0 -

I love CrossFit. It's the only workout that's inspired me to get up at 5am to work out. The people at my box are fabulous so I feel accountable to them and I like that about it. The WODS are fun, but intense. For example, my WOD today was a partner WOD so we completed it with a buddy:
1 mile run; then 50 GI Janes (25 each); 1 mile run with 5# plates; then 50 situps (50 each); 1 mile run
Seven months ago I couldn't run a mile. Today I did the whole WOD in 41 minutes. It's incredibly inspiring and the WODS vary every day so it's hard to get bored.
Every box is different. Some are great, some are good and some are bad. Do some research to find a CrossFit in your community then visit and speak with the owner and the head trainer. A good box will answer all of your questions and put you through a training course before you start to do anything serious. A good box will also ALWAYS have modifications for workout elements that you aren't quite ready for yet.
There are lovers and haters of CrossFit on MFP, so you will get a wide range of opinions here. The only negative thing I have to say about CrossFit is that it's pricey. Mine is $175/month.0 -
Much like Zumba, trainers need to be certified by that company to use that brand name. So, a studio can't offer Zumba if the trainer hasn't taken classes. Crossfit is a brand name, but the style of work out is just basic, hard-core boot camp-circuit-interval training. I'm sure you can find a gym near you that offers a class, pretty intense, you should try it.0

Charlotte,
I should also warn you that you will get a PM from Health_Gal. She hates CrossFit and is on a personal mission to dissuade people from giving it a try. She actually just messaged me again about it, which is laughable.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about CrossFit. No problems there. But, she's a special kind...0 -

Too funny, I'm pretty sure I got one from her awhile back when I made a post about starting crossfit.0 -
I got one.
I was amused.0 -
Haha. I knew it! Go figure.0

I told her 1.) I don't do cross fit so maybe she should actually not mass message people without cross checking what they actually said...
and 2. living life is dangerous- I guess maybe we should just stop doing that- because I know people who have gotten hurt doing that.
I'm amused.0 -
I loved Crossfit when I did it for a year and a half but I found I didn't need it anymore. I can (and do) most of the workouts myself, in a gym. The only thing I didn't like about it was the cliques, and the push for Paleo diet. Maybe that's just my box, but everyone was so competitive it just wasn't worth the $150 a month to be annoyed. I do like the workouts though, but some of the stuff *in my opinion* is geared more towards dudes than women. I want to work my legs a lot more than my upper body, and I don't need to do pullups 3 times a week. The workouts vary, some of them suck and some of them are great! I loved the circuit ones, and hated the workouts where I would get there and it said "Run 5k" on the board. I can run a 5k on my own if I want to (and I don't want to  )
Anyway, that's just my $.02. I am glad I did it, I had a great instructor who taught me everything I know and still use, and I'm grateful for that, but it isn't worth the money to me. I'm a bit of a loner at the gym anyway and I prefer it that way.0 -

Now that, my friend, would be a damn shame!0 -
I have went with friends a couple times and have loved it. The downfall for me was always how much they cost around here and the early morning work outs But the workout itself I find amazingly hard but rewarding0

She sent me one too way back... crazy, people can't keep their judgments to themselves...
If it is done appropriately, and with a trained professional, cross fit is a great thing. I have a friend who does it regularly, and I have gone a few times with her. It is very very intense, but you just do it as well as you can. The trainer should stop you if you are not doing a move correctly or in a way that could potentially injure you... I'm actually starting to go regularly to my friend's gym in September once I get back to school. I'm very excited because it is partly about getting into it with a group and making friends to support each other in like goals. My friend posted on fb the other day about how she had reached one of her goals at crossfit and had like 5-10 people comment on it from her gym about how proud they were... good motivation and holds you accountable
Good luck!!0 -
