I lift and run barefoot as much as I can, though I am considering trying a pair of Nike Romaleos 2 for squat and deads, and I do resort to Vibram's when I run on pavement. It seems that I cannot build enough callus to run barefoot on pavement even with tape.

It is also very bad for your arches to be putting that much stress on them without proper support.

I'm sorry, but no. The human body was designed to be barefoot. It becomes bad on our arches when we do not allow the body to do what it does maturally. Similar to back braces, they can do significantly more harm than good.

I lift in my socks, and I don't run. Ever. In fact, I learned how to hit farther playing softball so I wouldn't have to run.

Add me to the lift in socks crew. My husband doesn't get it, he thinks I'm nuts.

I am picky about my feet. I won't do any exercise without shoes. I don't go outside, or around the house without my shoes. I just don't like the way it feels.

Careful walking barefoot outside. I did that as a kid and developed plantar's warts as a result. Very painful to get rid of. It is also very bad for your arches to be putting that much stress on them without proper support.

Go research the prevalence of planters warts among populations that normally don't wear shoes. As for arches, that's because the person is either overweight and/or the muscles in his/her feet have atrophied.

Amen! I was barefoot in the woods when I was a kid and never got warts! My feet are so strong and I have never had trouble with my arches! Shoes are kinda like jail.......

So glad I read this post. I hate working out with shoes (1) they make my arches hurt a tun (2) I like feeling the extra umph in my legs when I do jumping jacks etc.. The only concern I have is regarding impact. Do it impact your joints (knees, etc..) more without shoes on?

Mostly barefoot, in the house. Little dance pumps if I'm doing Just Sweat.

Those people don't live in polluted metropolitan areas where disease and pollution are rampant. You know that thimng on your neck isn't just a hat rack.

It is quite clear from this statement that you haven't been to places like China, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. I have, and I can assure you that walking barefoot through the streets of New York is a picnic compared to that. Actually go do the research that I suggested.
  • For the most part I've ALWAYS exercised barefoot!! Even now training for a fight I got to the gym and train barefoot. My training thought I was a bit nuts at first but he saw that I can grip the mat good with my toes so he's okay with it.

At home I workout barefoot. So, yoga (of course) pilates, ballet, body weight strength training, kettle bells, other forms of dance. But my ceramic tile floors get pretty cold in winter so then I do my workouts mostly in ballet shoes.

I run in traditional running shoes. I'm intrigued by the minimalist movement, but can't be bothered to put the work in to get used to a pair of the shoes.
