Get stronger and lose fat at the same time?

Options
I hope this isn't a silly question, but is it possible to lose fat and get stronger in the same time period? If I'm eating a calorie deficit will this mean that strength training won't be effective?

I'm unsure of whether I should try and do both at the same time to get into shape or whether it's better to lose fat, then gain muscle (or the other way around).

Gaining muscle does not equal gaining strength. To be effective at both gaining muscle and gaining strength, eating at a surplus is ideal. however, if you are new to lifting, you may see some initial muscle gain while eating at a deficit. And, you can definitely increase strength while eating at a deficit. Your muscles can get stronger without getting bigger. Your strength gains may be slower, and you may have more stalls, but you can definitely up your lifts while losing fat on a deficit.

You should definitely lift, even on a deficit, even if you don't gain new muscle or strength. You'll preserve mass. Doing only cardio or no exercise at all will result in weight loss, but it will be from fat and LBM. By doing ST now, you can help insure that most of your loss is from fat. Once you lose the fat, if you still want to add muscle, you can go on a "bulk" cycle and lift heavy, eat at a surplus and gain some mass (along with a bit of fat), then cut the fat off by eating at a deficit in 6-8 months or so. (Known as a bulk/cut cycle in the BB world.) You could also aim for a body recomposition by staying around maintenance (after fat loss) and lifting, but the results tend to be slower.
