Why should I buy antibiotic free?

Hello! I had a post this morning about "why should I buy organic", and I had an overwhelming amount of helpful responses (thank you to all who answered).
Anyway, I wanted to expand a bit on this and see what the opinions are of the folks on here about organic meat. I'm unsure if I'm using the proper term, but I am talking about meat that is antibiotic, hormone free, and probably a few other things free (free range, etc?).
Anyway, Why or Why Not should someone choose this product over regular old chicken breast/ground beef at the meat counter?
I'm trying to research a bit on my own, but this whole topic is new to me (I'm used to just buying whatever is on sale in the produce/meat department). Just curious what research fellow MFPers have come across and how that impacts there shopping decisions.

from my knowledge and what i hear, is animal that are injected with these steroids, or whatever, they have terrible lives. they are treated terrible. And what is in the animals body is in yours when you eat the animal. Example.....animals get injected with steroids that in us cause infertility. In children it can prevent growth, and infertility. If at all possible, you want to eat healthy meat, not meat thats been injected with all these steroids, and hormones. In beef they inject Progesterone, and Testosterone are the main ones your would have heard of, but they inject 6 different hormones in Cows. There are questions as to if these hormones cause Breast. Prostate, and Colon Cancer, and disrupt the Human Hormone balance.0

On the subject of antibiotics I always refer to the issue of the intestinal flora and such. 90% of the cells in your body are not "yours" (not human) but bacteria that helps your body function properly. We're a wonderful symbiotic system consisting of thousands of species working together. Consumption of antibiotics and antibiotic-treated food however can result in antibiotic-resistant strains to develop in our bodies and in the environment, leading to an increasing fear that at one point we'll run out of effective antibiotics. Bacteria acquire genes through horizontal transfer (they "borrow" genes from neighbours) that offer resistance to a particular drug, and we're basically creating super bugs.0

You should buy antibiotic free because when you eat animals that have antibiotics you are loading your body with doses of the medication over and over again. This has several affects on your body...
1. can increase yeast problems in both men and women
2. can decrease effectiveness of birth control so messes with your hormones all month long
3. makes you more susceptible to disease
When you do get sick and you really need an antibiotic, it's not going to be as effective as it would be if you were eating meat that was not treated with antibiotics. This is one of the reasons why we have diseases like MRSA and it could have been prevented.0 -

The animals have to be kept free of disease when they are kept in crowded conditions.
Unfortunately antibiotic resistance comes down to far more than that, and has dozens more environmental and medical factors. Not buying the beef isn't going to prevent antibiotic resistance, that is sadly inevitable.0 -

I definitely am going to be looking into facts, I just enjoy reading what other people have to say/their opinions on the topic before I start forming my own opinion based on research.

If one is siding with caution, then buy organic "certified" meat.
As of this point, there is no substantial for/against how hormones and antibiotics are actually affecting humans. More research needs to be done.

Also, if as a society we are worried about the ethical treatment of animals, why wouldn't we want them to have antibiotics? Most people give their children antibiotics when they are ill, why not animals. It is cruel to make them suffer.
Just my opinion, but I am also the daughter of a cattle rancher, and sometimes the posts of those who really have no idea what they are talking about really set me on edge.0 -

I buy local beef where I know how the cattle are treated. But if I have to purchase from the store, I don't actively seek out antibiotic free, and would rather not purchase it.0 -

It is the opinion of many Americans that organic food is healthier and safer than conventional foods; an opinion that the organic food industry strives to cultivate. However, as former Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman pointed out, "The organic label is a marketing tool. It is not a statement about food safety."
One major misconception about the organic food industry is that their products are not grown using pesticides. This is not entirely accurate. It is true that organic producers do not use any synthetic pesticides. However, they use many "organic" pesticides, which are pesticides derived from natural products. As Alex Avery of the Center For Global Food Issues points out, "Organic pesticides are the most heavily used agricultural pesticides in the U.S." Pesticides used by organic farmers account for over 25% of the total pesticide use in the United States. This figure does not include the most commonly used organic pesticide, Bt, because it cannot be measured in pounds per active chemical use. Also, many other common organic pesticides are not included in this figure because they are not measured, either.
Two of the most common organic pesticides, copper and sulfur, are used as fungicides by organic growers. Because they are not as effective as their synthetic counterparts, they are applied at significantly higher rates. This is disturbing because both sulfur and copper have greater environmental toxicity than their synthetic counterparts. The two most commonly used insecticides by organic farmers are Bt and oil (usually petroleum or soybean oil). However, a substantial amount of oil has to be used to achieve the same results as synthetic insecticides. Other organic pesticides are generally extracted from plants. One such pesticide, pyrethrum, has a demand satisfied by the hand harvest of about 600 million flowers per year. This accounts for a significant amount of green space that could otherwise be used as wildlife preserve or to grow food.
One type of pesticide that organic growers admittedly do not use, in any form, are herbicides. However, the development of herbicides has led to low-till farming methods that significantly decrease soil erosion and increase the sustainability of agricultural land. Bereft of this option, organic growers must rely on methods that lead to increased soil erosion, unless they maintain a strict crop rotation schedule.
Another type of pest control used by organic growers is so-called "biocontrol" techniques. This type of pest control relies on insects, fungi, or bacteria to destroy pests that are harmful to crops. Organic farmers promote this as a less environmentally damaging method of pest control. However, the introduction of such biocontrol can have a debilitating effect on local ecosystems. Since most biocontrol organisms are not native to the areas in which they are employed, they have led to substantial ecological devastation in several areas.
Not only do organic farmers make the claim that their products are environmentally safe, they also claim that organic products are healthier. However, there is no evidence that this is the case. In addition, organic produce causes an increased risk of food poisoning. According to the CDC, 36% of people suffering from E. coli O157:H7 infection contracted it from organic food. This strain of E. Coli is particularly vicious-it kills thousands of people every year, and can cause substantial damage to the liver or kidneys. Organic foods are susceptible to E. Coli infection because manure and compost are commonly used fertilizers in organic farming, and both often contain large amounts of the bacteria.
Although organic farms make the claim that their products are better for the environment, produce less toxic chemicals, and are safer and healthier, the facts do not seem to bear these claims out. Although it is true that there are potential long-term health threats stemming from the use of synthetic fertilizers, the evidence for such a threat has yet to be substantiated in the nearly 40 years since this danger was first identified in Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. However, the risks of using organic foods are known and substantiated. This is not to say that organic foods are substantially unsafe-feel free to eat organic. Just be aware that the extra bucks that you're shelling out don't provide an extra dime of safety or nutrition.

(4) Biologics—Vaccines.
(5) Butorphanol (CAS #-42408-82-2)—federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the lawful written or oral order of a licensed veterinarian, in full compliance with the AMDUCA and 21 CFR part 530 of the Food and Drug Administration regulations. Also, for use under 7 CFR part 205, the NOP requires:
(i) Use by or on the lawful written order of a licensed veterinarian; and

(i) Use by or on the lawful written order of a licensed veterinarian;
(ii) The existence of an emergency; and
(iii) A meat withdrawal period of at least 8 days after administering to livestock intended for slaughter; and a milk discard period of at least 4 days after administering to dairy animals.
(b) As topical treatment, external parasiticide or local anesthetic as applicable.
(1) Copper sulfate.
(2) Formic acid (CAS # 64-18-6)—for use as a pesticide solely within honeybee hives.
(3) Iodine.
(4) Lidocaine—as a local anesthetic. Use requires a withdrawal period of 90 days after administering to livestock intended for slaughter and 7 days after administering to dairy animals.
(5) Lime, hydrated—as an external pest control, not permitted to cauterize physical alterations or deodorize animal wastes.
(6) Mineral oil—for topical use and as a lubricant.
(7) Procaine—as a local anesthetic, use requires a withdrawal period of 90 days after administering to livestock intended for slaughter and 7 days after administering to dairy animals.
(8) Sucrose octanoate esters (CAS #s-42922-74-7; 58064-47-4)—in accordance with approved labeling.
(c) As feed supplements—None.
(d) As feed additives.
(1) DL-Methionine, DL-Methionine-hydroxy analog, and DL-Methionine-hydroxy analog calcium (CAS #'s 59-51-8, 583-91-5, 4857-44-7, and 922-50-9)—for use only in organic poultry production at the following maximum levels of synthetic methionine per ton of feed: Laying and broiler chickens—2 pounds; turkeys and all other poultry—3 pounds.
(2) Trace minerals, used for enrichment or fortification when FDA approved.
(3) Vitamins, used for enrichment or fortification when FDA approved.
(e) As synthetic inert ingredients as classified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), for use with nonsynthetic substances or synthetic substances listed in this section and used as an active pesticide ingredient in accordance with any limitations on the use of such substances.
(1) EPA List 4—Inerts of Minimal Concern.
(2) [Reserved]
(f) Excipients, only for use in the manufacture of drugs used to treat organic livestock when the excipient is: Identified by the FDA as Generally Recognized As Safe; Approved by the FDA as a food additive; or Included in the FDA review and approval of a New Animal Drug Application or New Drug Application.
Here's a, partial, list of substances allowed by the USDA to be used on food and still be labeled "Organic", which includes pesticides:
(a) As algicide, disinfectants, and sanitizer, including irrigation system cleaning systems.
(1) Alcohols.
(i) Ethanol.
(ii) Isopropanol.
(2) Chlorine materials—For pre-harvest use, residual chlorine levels in the water in direct crop contact or as water from cleaning irrigation systems applied to soil must not exceed the maximum residual disinfectant limit under the Safe Drinking Water Act, except that chlorine products may be used in edible sprout production according to EPA label directions.
(i) Calcium hypochlorite.
(ii) Chlorine dioxide.
(iii) Sodium hypochlorite.
(3) Copper sulfate—for use as an algicide in aquatic rice systems, is limited to one application per field during any 24-month period. Application rates are limited to those which do not increase baseline soil test values for copper over a timeframe agreed upon by the producer and accredited certifying agent.
(4) Hydrogen peroxide.
(5) Ozone gas—for use as an irrigation system cleaner only.
(6) Peracetic acid—for use in disinfecting equipment, seed, and asexually propagated planting material.
(7) Soap-based algicide/demossers.
(8) Sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate (CAS #-15630-89-4)—Federal law restricts the use of this substance in food crop production to approved food uses identified on the product label.
(b) As herbicides, weed barriers, as applicable.
(1) Herbicides, soap-based—for use in farmstead maintenance (roadways, ditches, right of ways, building perimeters) and ornamental crops.
(2) Mulches.
(i) Newspaper or other recycled paper, without glossy or colored inks.
(ii) Plastic mulch and covers (petroleum-based other than polyvinyl chloride (PVC)).
(c) As compost feedstocks—Newspapers or other recycled paper, without glossy or colored inks.
(d) As animal repellents—Soaps, ammonium—for use as a large animal repellant only, no contact with soil or edible portion of crop.
(e) As insecticides (including acaricides or mite control).
(1) Ammonium carbonate—for use as bait in insect traps only, no direct contact with crop or soil.
(2) Aqueous potassium silicate (CAS #-1312-76-1)—the silica, used in the manufacture of potassium silicate, must be sourced from naturally occurring sand.
(3) Boric acid—structural pest control, no direct contact with organic food or crops.
(4) Copper sulfate—for use as tadpole shrimp control in aquatic rice production, is limited to one application per field during any 24-month period. Application rates are limited to levels which do not increase baseline soil test values for copper over a timeframe agreed upon by the producer and accredited certifying agent.
(5) Elemental sulfur.
(6) Lime sulfur—including calcium polysulfide.
(7) Oils, horticultural—narrow range oils as dormant, suffocating, and summer oils.
(8) Soaps, insecticidal.
(9) Sticky traps/barriers.
(10) Sucrose octanoate esters (CAS #s—42922-74-7; 58064-47-4)—in accordance with approved labeling.
(f) As insect management. Pheromones.
(g) As rodenticides. Vitamin D3 .
(h) As slug or snail bait. Ferric phosphate (CAS # 10045-86-0).
(i) As plant disease control.
(1) Aqueous potassium silicate (CAS #-1312-76-1)—the silica, used in the manufacture of potassium silicate, must be sourced from naturally occurring sand.
(2) Coppers, fixed—copper hydroxide, copper oxide, copper oxychloride, includes products exempted from EPA tolerance, Provided, That, copper-based materials must be used in a manner that minimizes accumulation in the soil and shall not be used as herbicides.
(3) Copper sulfate—Substance must be used in a manner that minimizes accumulation of copper in the soil.
(4) Hydrated lime.
(5) Hydrogen peroxide.
(6) Lime sulfur.
(7) Oils, horticultural, narrow range oils as dormant, suffocating, and summer oils.
(8) Peracetic acid—for use to control fire blight bacteria.
(9) Potassium bicarbonate.
(10) Elemental sulfur.
(11) Streptomycin, for fire blight control in apples and pears only until October 21, 2014.
(12) Tetracycline, for fire blight control in apples and pears only until October 21, 2014.
(j) As plant or soil amendments.
(1) Aquatic plant extracts (other than hydrolyzed)—Extraction process is limited to the use of potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide; solvent amount used is limited to that amount necessary for extraction.
(2) Elemental sulfur.
(3) Humic acids—naturally occurring deposits, water and alkali extracts only.
(4) Lignin sulfonate—chelating agent, dust suppressant.
(5) Magnesium sulfate—allowed with a documented soil deficiency.

(7) Liquid fish products—can be pH adjusted with sulfuric, citric or phosphoric acid. The amount of acid used shall not exceed the minimum needed to lower the pH to 3.5.
(8) Vitamins, B1 , C, and E.
(9) Sulfurous acid (CAS # 7782-99-2) for on-farm generation of substance utilizing 99% purity elemental sulfur per paragraph (j)(2) of this section.
(k) As plant growth regulators. Ethylene gas—for regulation of pineapple flowering.
(l) As floating agents in postharvest handling.
(1) Lignin sulfonate.
(2) Sodium silicate—for tree fruit and fiber processing.
(m) As synthetic inert ingredients as classified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), for use with nonsynthetic substances or synthetic substances listed in this section and used as an active pesticide ingredient in accordance with any limitations on the use of such substances.
(1) EPA List 4—Inerts of Minimal Concern.
(2) EPA List 3—Inerts of unknown toxicity—for use only in passive pheromone dispensers.
(n) Seed preparations. Hydrogen chloride (CAS # 7647-01-0)—for delinting cotton seed for planting.
(o) As production aids. Microcrystalline cheesewax (CAS #'s 64742-42-3, 8009-03-08, and 8002-74-2)-for use in log grown mushroom production. Must be made without either ethylene-propylene co-polymer or synthetic colors.

First off - steroids? No.
Hormones - yes we all have hormones. But cows are injected with GROWTH hormones. These are not their natural hormones, they are extra hormones given to the cow so it grows bigger and faster (more meat faster). In Canada, growth hormones are banned in dairy cows, pigs and poultry, but are used in beef cattle.
Antibiotics- So many animals in such small enclosures means disease spreads quickly. So animals are given tons of antibiotics. This means bacteria (the bad kind, nothing to do with "intestinal flora") are becoming resistant to it. We don't have much else to fight off bacterial infections, so this can (will) become a serious problem in the (near) future. In Canada, chicken eggs from hens who are given antibiotics cannot be sold. Neither can milk form cows treated with antibiotics.
Environment- these hormones and antibiotics end up getting into the environment at large. This is especially bad in fish farming since the antibiotics spread through the water very fast, but the same thing happens on land too.
So it's your decision. Factory farming means animals in small enclosures, probably never see sunlight, sometimes don't have enough room to turn around, usually not treated very well, fed hormones and antibiotics, has a high environmental impact, and if it doesn't cause harm to human health, eventually antibiotic resistance will. Or buy organic free range grass-fed, and you're more likely to be supporting smaller farms with less animal density, less hormones and antibiotics, less environmental impact. The label doesn't have to be certified, the USDA makes the certification process nearly impossible for smaller farmers. So if you go to a farmers market, don't be surprised if many sell organic meat that isn't USDA certified.0 -

Learn the science based facts instead of believing half-baked and made up stories.

Also, if as a society we are worried about the ethical treatment of animals, why wouldn't we want them to have antibiotics? Most people give their children antibiotics when they are ill, why not animals. It is cruel to make them suffer.
Just my opinion, but I am also the daughter of a cattle rancher, and sometimes the posts of those who really have no idea what they are talking about really set me on edge.
the point is not about treating sick animals. the problem is why the animals get sick in the first place. it's because they are crammed together. too many animals, not enough space, the crappy and unhealthy environment they live in promotes disease, and because theres not many so close together, it spreads quickly. so most of the time, the antibiotics aren't just given to that one cow that got sick, its put in the feed. all the animals are getting antibiotics, all the time, in hope to prevent them all from getting sick. so no, there is nothing ethical about antibiotics in this context, the ethical solution is making sure your animals are happy, healthy, and have adequate room to move around, so that ONLY the sick animals are given medications when necessary. Not trying to jam as many into a barn as you can, knowing they are all at risk of getting sick.0 -
You should buy antibiotic free because when you eat animals that have antibiotics you are loading your body with doses of the medication over and over again. This has several affects on your body...
1. can increase yeast problems in both men and women
2. can decrease effectiveness of birth control so messes with your hormones all month long
3. makes you more susceptible to disease
When you do get sick and you really need an antibiotic, it's not going to be as effective as it would be if you were eating meat that was not treated with antibiotics. This is one of the reasons why we have diseases like MRSA and it could have been prevented.
I got MRSA from my cat once.

My dad's cows are happy, healthy, and have adequate room to move around. Even in most feed lots, they are not crammed together with no room, and trust me, I have seen my fair share of feed lots.
If you want to eat beef from a cow that had cancer-eye, or hoof rot (both of which happen in open pastures) then you go for it...0
