I've recently taken up walking/jogging around my neighborhood, and I've discovered a great trick for adding distance without having to go too far from home. Instead of sticking to the main roads, follow the sidewalk - go around culdesacs/dead-end streets, go a ways down side-streets, then back out to the main road, etc. I went almost 4 miles last night without duplicating any parts of my route and without even going a mile away from my house! All those side streets / culdesacs really add up!! It surprised me when I realized how much distance it adds. Plus, it's a great way to learn the layout of your neighborhood!

I've been doing something similar since we moved into our new neighborhood back in March. There's a part of our neighborhood where the roads go in almost an oval, so I usually do my warmup, then jog to this part of the neighborhood and treat it as my "track" , circling it as many times as necessary to complete my B210K workout, then head back toward home. I love that I never have to run along a main road. So much safer! :)
  • That is SO true! I just got back from a bike ride and I did 4.1 miles by going down every cul-de-sac!

This is what I do... avoid main roads, use footpaths, canal paths, park trails and try to add elevation changes too (eg walk up and over bridges crossing the canal, rather than go under).

It certainly adds to the distance as well as variety.

The other thing I do is carry two water bottles to act as a bit of weight/resistance for each arm.

That's a pretty neat site. I use my smart phone w/gps - I downloaded the Endomondo app, which tracks distance, speed, maps the route, will tell you how long it took you to do each mile, and on the website it even show graphs of your elevation and speed throughout the route (it automatically uploads the route to their website if you're logged in on your phone). If I didn't have that, I'd probably use the mapmyrun site, but since Endomondo does it for me, it's very convenient.
