crunchy knees

my knees are making a very crunchy sound when i go up and down stairs. They make the sound even if i'm just sitting and put my ear close to them and bend and straighten my legs. It's scaring me and grossing me out. haha. My knees don't hurt at all but the sound is enough to make me wonder if i should stop running.
I first noticed the noise about a a year ago after my last season of playing soccer, it worried me then but it had seemed to go away after not playing. i chalked it up to over using them, and they just needed some rest.
well the sound is back, i do run but i dont use my poor leggies nearly as much as i was while i was playing..
I did some searching on the internet and it seems like it could just be fluid moving around underneath my knee cap. They don't hurt so i dont think i need to go to the doctor or anything... has anyone else experienced this? any advice or insight would be helpful.

sounds like you're running low on cartilage:noway:
Might be worth a check in with your doc..
Edit: Worn down cartilage can be due weight issues but also being involved in sports etc. simply wears our cartilage down in time.
The person below shared having arthiscopic (sp) surgery to shave down the rough cartilage that can rub again the bone.
When the cartilage wears completely down it's bone on bone and it's got a distinct crunch/pop sound.
There are other sounds joints make but best to check in with your doc so you don't end up worse and have to quit sports all together and or worse yet get a knee replacement, not fun at all! Have had lots of friends in past sports deal with that...
All that's needed to check is an MRI of the joint.0 -
Mine do lots of little snaps when I crouch down and get back up. Almost sound like a roll of bubble wrap all popping at the same time. I also get loud snaps occasionally when I walk or bend my knees. Not sure if this sounds like your crunchy knees or not.
Anywho - had tons of X-rays done and it turns out my bones were rubbing against eachother causing all those snaps and pops. I had to have surgery because after years of those pops and snaps my bones became very sharp edged, they had to shave down my bones and knee cap and pull out all the crap and torn cartiledge and whatnot. That was 11 years ago... I'm probably due up for another surgery but I want to drop my weight first and make it not so hard on my knees.
You should probably have it checked out by a doc
Edit: Like the person who posted after me, I had this problem ever since I started walking. It cause me tons of pain throughout my childhood and still occasionally to this day my knees hurt.0 -
Mine do that too..and have for years, ever since I was a kid actually (and I wasnt overweight then!)
good luck on finding out what it is!0 -
To be honest, if you aren't in any pain or discomfort it's probably nothing. But if you are that concerned an internet forum is not going to give you the answer you need. See your doc.0

Mine do that too; I actually cannot lunge very well anymore either. I'm not a doctor person; I had my Chiropractor take an x-ray; he said the cartiledge is decreasing. If you arent in pain I wouldnt worry too much.0

Mine "clack" when I walk. My mom used to call me The Clacker, and always knew when I woke up cuz she could hear me walking down the hall when I lived at home. Saw specialist for it and he said it was from the ligaments around the knee not being very strong. It was like an elastic stretching and then popping against the bone. Best remedy was physical therapy to get them strong. They still occassionally do it, but not as much as they used to.0
