Advice on weight training

I hear so many people talking about weight training and I don't know where to start. I tried to find a program online, but just didn't know what I was doing.
I don't have a gym membership so it needs to be something I can do at home. I have a few small hand weights (not even sure what they're called - sorry) and I found a few exercises for those but I'd like to add in some more.
If anyone has any recommendations on small equipment that could be put into a closet that would be great too!

do some searches on Kettle Bells- and KB workouts.
I would either invest in those- OR the weights that you can change the weight on them.
KB workouts- are one of the most bang for your buck at home with strength training... that being said- almost anything you can do with a KB- you can do with a DB (ALMOST).0 -
I enjoy working out with DVDs. Go to Collagevideo.com and look through their collection. I think you can search workouts by equipment required. Good luck. I find that DVDs push me harder than I would push myself.0

Trying body weight exercises? It should start you off relatively cheap, all you need is chin-up bar.
E.g
Bod weight Squats
Body weight press-ups
Various crunches?
If you're a beginner you want to focus on full-body weight training.
If you can to invest in equipment you can get decent dumbbells second and the possibilities are limitless at that point.0 -
Do searches on YouTube. Amazing what you can find there for free video. I know they have Kettlebell and even show how to make homemade ones. Spark People website also offers some on-line exercise plans. All for free.0

Go to the library and browse the exercise DVDs. You can try them and see if they feel right to you.
You might choose to get resistance bands, which store easily, are inexpensive and are versatile. (not for latex allergic people!!!)0 -

I've done it a couple of times and it is a good workout. There is a link from that article to 50 bodyweight exercises that can be added it.
If you do join a gym, you can add weights and balls to these workouts.0 -

Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe is a very good resource for a brand new lifter. It focuses on compound lifts (ones that require the use of several muscle groups to accomplish) like squats, dead lifts, bench press, etc. It's also barbell based so there's a little bit of equipment involved. If you're looking for something that requires a little less equipment P90X only requires a pull up bar and dumbbells/resistance bands, and all the moves are demonstrated in the video.0
