Anyone working towards knee replacement ??

My name is Joelene. I am 51 years old. Live in the Pacific Northwest. I am married with 2 children. I am working towards getting a healthy place and also double knee replacement. I currently have loss 40 lbs and have to be at the 200 lb mark for surgery. I would like to be under 200 lbs before surgery but most of all I want a strong core. So that is it about me .

Haven't you found that your knees feel better since the weight loss? Are you walking or exercising in any way?

I was on this same path, knee replacement tend to run in my family. I have had RA in both knees and injuries to my left Achilles tendon, and Plantar Factitious in my left heel. However once I began walking, I started very slowly 15 min 3x a week to now about 40 min 5x week, it started feeling better quickly. I have been almost pain free now for several weeks, which is extraordinary for my as I was feeling very much like I was going to need a walker soon. I was having almost constant pain in my knees which my dr said could only be cured by knee replacement.

You may want to hold off a while on your surgery until you see if you are able to make progress with diet and exercise.

    Good luck :)

My doctor told me my right knee needs replacement. Considering how major that procedure is, you should really think hard about it. Rethink once you get to your target weight. I'm contemplating whether I want to go through that or just deal with it. Regardless, I'm working on dropping 100+. Once I get there, I might reconsider.

Well as someone who is now fast approaching the 1 year anniversary of getting his right knee replaced (September 24), I regretted my decision for a couple of weeks. But since then I can say it's been the best thing for me. I've accomplished all of this weight loss, body recomposition and everything else since I got released from care on January 2. I have a form of congenital arthritis and I had both hips done 9 years ago. This is the best I've ever felt, the best I've ever moved, the most I've ever been able to do in my entire life. But it is a hard recovery -- much more so than from the hips. But in the end it has all been so worth it. I went to see my physical therapist a few weeks ago. The last time I saw him was on January 2. The first words out of his mouth: "Where's the rest of you". Now THAT was a huge NSV.

Do everything you can to prepare for surgery. Lose the weight, try to strengthen the knee, hip, quads and hamstrings as much as possible without putting more wear and tear on them. Every little bit you can do now will make it easier afterwards.

I thought I was ready. I'd been through the hips. I had no idea how tough the work would be. But now I know it is the best decision I've ever made.

I'm not at that stage yet but I'm getting close. They want me to exercise to try and pull my knee back n place by strengthng my quads. But do u know how painful it is to be on ur leg for 8-12 hr then go work out. ... Knee injuries I was told no treadmill. I stick to the bike, elliptical and swimming.mive post ten pounds so far but a long way to go but hoping I won't need another surgery anytime soon. It's hard working out in this much pain but I'm sucking it up then I lay n bed with ice :) good luck!!!

I appreciate everyone's thoughts on knee replacement. I am exercising at least 5 days a week. 30 mins cardio on a bike or a sit down elliptical and weight training. I have severe osteoarthritis in both knees and hips. I am bone on bone. No cartilage at all in my knees. Bone spurs also. I am currently weighing around 230 and hope to be around 160 by surgery time next June. I am seeing a slight improvement in my knees when walking but some days the pain is awful. So I keep losing weight and exercising. I want to be at the best weight possible and be the strongest I can be.

Off subject but how do I get the My Fitness Pal tracker at the end of my posts ?
