Under Calorie Goal but Over for Other Things

Question about calorie intake...

So if I go my whole day and stay under my calorie goal but somehow I go over my suger, carbs, or fat goals, does that do much harm to me. Like, will that make me gain weight or cause me not to lose? Cause if that's the case, I seem to find it pretty hard not to exceed in those areas. Please help!

Thanks!

Desi.

Just bumping this post up because I have the same question! I always go over in sugar because I eat so much fruit.

Eat more protein. You won't be hungry for all the extra sugars.
  • The problem with that is that it doesn't take a lot to go over the protein limit though either. I rarely go anywhere near my carbs limit so I figure (rightly or wrongly) that it may balance out going over the sugar limit slightly... Not sure if that's sound logic, but perhaps someone may have some feedback they want to provide on this?

As long as you stay under your caloric goal, you should lose. However, if you eat a lot of sodium, you are going to retain fluid and it increases you blood pressure. Eating too much sugar is hard on your body because it must produce insulin to counteract the sugar intake. I wouldn't worry a lot about it if your sugar is coming from fruits, but if its coming from processed foods, you may want to see what you can do to cut down on it. With fats, try to eat healthy fats (unsaturated fats) and reduce saturated and trans fats.

So yeah, you should lose weight by staying under calories but to do it "healthily", you want to keep the other nutrients in mind.

I say all this but I'm in the same boat as you many days of the week. Keeping under sodium is the hardest, especially if I eat a frozen meal. But it's a learning thing and we'll get the hang of it!

You can manually change your protein and carb goals. I wouldn't worry about it much as long as you are staying within your calorie budget.
  • As long as you stay under your calorie goal, you will lose weight. Try to stay under the carb, fat, and sugar limits as often as you can, but hey, nobody's perfect!

Sometimes I go over my sugar limit just from eating healthy foods like beans, carrots, and fruit...
  • I think it's important to stay below on sodium the rest I'm not too worried about. I'd like to find a packaged smoked salmon with less sodium...any suggestions?

It's fine to go over protein, or go over fat as long as you're not exceeding your calorie goal. Try not to go over on carbs because that means you're lacking in either protein or fat

I'd also love information on this - I eat 2-3 piece of fruit a day normally and ALWAYS go over on my sugar! I mean I know fruit sugar is different but I actually find it impossible not to go exceed my limit.

Unless you have a medical reason to worry about sugar intake such as diabetes, prediabetes, PCOS or insulin resistance, it is inconsequential. All that matters is total carb intake, percentage of carbs from sugar does not matter
  • Ok this helps a lot. Thanks everyone!
