Hair loss?

Hello! I've been using myfitnesspal since January and I've managed to lose 50 lbs so far.
I've recently in the last month or so noticed more hair than normal coming out in my hair brush and in the shower. It is currently suggesting that I eat 1440 calories per day. I DO eat clean at least 80% of the time and I feel my nutritional needs are being met. I'm wondering if it has to do with such a low calorie intake? Has anyone experienced anything like this?
I'm 21, 5'3 and currently 180lbs.

I wish I could give you the answer. I'm having the same issue. My hair has been thinning out for months now and I can't figure out why!

Hair loss was one of the first symptoms I had of Hypothyroidism. It's easy enough to get a blood draw done. Beyond that, check for vitamin deficiencies?

    Good luck!
  • Have you ladies had any traumatic event occur around 3 months ago (or 3 months from the start of the hair shed?) It can be caused by emotional or physical stress and is called Telogen Effluvium. Very, very common. If that's what it is you will not lose all your hair and it will grow back normally once it has finished it's shed. The 3 month time factor is because that's how long it takes to fall out once it dies.

It happened to me a few years ago after dental surgery and I was so worried about it, but my hair grew back completely normally. Lots of information about it on the internet, but if it keeps up see your doctor for blood tests. Good luck!

I would go and see your doctor as there are many reasons for your hair to thin out including sudden weight loss. I had it when I had lost a similar amount of weight but I had also been through a stressful time. It got thicker again.

Is that something that onsets suddenly? My last blood work was normal.

I was in a car wreck and had a concussion about 2 months ago. But that's a bit shy of 3 months.
This has me pretty worried. I like my hair! When I googled the only thing I really found was starvation.

I'm having a horrible problem with my hair falling out. I just had a baby almost 10 weeks ago so that could be it, but I also think I might be having a problem with my thyroid because I'm severely stressed and go days on end without sleep which can cause the thyroid to start acting up.
Its so bad. And what makes it worse is that my hair black and I have bangs so you can see my scalp! I'm going to have to get a wig soon.
  • It is something that happens quickly- for me I just suddenly started shedding massive amounts of hair. The three months I guess is an approximate timeframe as I'm sure everyone is different. If you google Telogen Effluvium you will see many, many mentions of it. Thyroid can also be a cause of hair loss, and that can be determined by a blood test. If it is worrying you, go and see your doctor and stressing about it might make it worse. I just know that it has happened to quite a few people I know and for all of them it has thickened up to normal again, so I hope that gives you some peace of mind.
  • i mean, go and see your doctor to try to put your mind at rest, not that seeing your doctor will make it worse. I just re-read my post and thought I should clarify!

The other thing to check for anyone losing hair is - is it falling out in patches or generally all over? If it is in patches (like, you can see round bald circles) then go to the doctor straight away. If it is a general thinning then it is almost certainly a temporary condition but it is best to find out why it is happening.

It can also be caused by losing weight too quickly. You will often see this with people who have weight loss surgery at times as well. I would definitely talk to your doctor.

I'd definitely check if you are getting all the vitamins, minerals etc that you need, if you are and the hair loss continues... ask a doctor? Or at a pharmacy, they might be able to give advice on that.

It is an all over thing for me. I'm trying to avoid going to the doctor unless I have to. Like I said my last blood work was normal including my thyroid. I guess I'll see if a multivitamin helps and if it keeps up I WILL go to the doctor. Ah I don't know this is just so weird for me!
