Syrup/topping for french toast that is low carb?

I am looking for suggestions on how to lower carb, without being too high in calories, intake on french toast. Once I factor in the bread and the syrup, it is already at 52 carbs. I have been using 100% pure maple syrup as I like to avoid HFCS as much as I can.

I appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

you can get sugar free, no calorie coffee syrups. The dollar store even has some - vanilla, hazelnut, caramel. Those may work.

Joseph's Sugar Free Maple Syrup. It's so good I could "drink it" out of the bottle.

Since you're already eating the French Toast, I really wouldn't concern myself with a low carb topping...really, what's the point? My personal preference would be natural maple syrup...satisfy my craving and call it a day and get back on the low carb wagon tomorrow.

  • I use smuckers light jam, blueberry is especially nice, it's mostly just fruit with enough jammy stuff to melt like a syrupy glaze, I do this for pancakes too, 3 big tbs is like 35 cals probably low carb, its mostly just fruit,
or better yet thaw out 1/4 c frozen blueberries, mash them with a fork and stir in a tsp of chia seeds, let stand 5 minutes, turns into a jam with no sugar and much more nutrients

Whenever we were haphazardly out of syrup when I was younger, we would use powdered sugar. Tasty, but sugary!

The point would be fewer carbs.

I've tried a bunch of them and I think that "Log Cabin" sugar-free tastes the best and is reasonably thick.

I do 4 diced strawberries and a small sprinkle of powdered sugar (maybe 1/2 tablespoon). Sometimes I don't even do the powdered sugar.

I use Sarah Lee light bread, sugar free syrup, and I use egg whites, and skim milk....OMG, I know what I'm making this weekend for breakfast...LOL...
  • Hmm... french toast sounds delicious right now! Anyway, haven't tried it on french toast, but on regular toast (rye, whole wheat, anything really), you can put a layer of almond butter, a sprinkle of cinnamon and a small swirl of honey. Spread the honey out with a knife and it is inrcedible! And the best part is a little tiny bit goes a LONG WAY and helps curb my sugary cravings.

microwave some frozen berries! they end up nice and mushy, perfect for a topping, and the freezing/heating process makes them release this syrupy juice that's totally natural because nothing is added to the fruit. I can't say it's really low carb, but you can have almost a cup of it for roughly around the calories and carbs you'd get from just a tablespoon of syrup, and more nutritious.

another idea is to cut up strawberries and put a little sugar and cinnamon on them, then put them back in the fridge for a while. I don't know why, but when you cut up berries like that and let them sit with jut a little sugar, they get softer and sweeter and even a little syrupy, too.

  • Perhaps puree some raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, or some other sort of fruit? And a sprinkle of powdered sugar to sweeten? :)

there are loads of sugar free and low sugar low carb syrups about - especially if you are in the USA!
However, it would be better if you could wean yourself off the need to have super sweet on your french toast.
Try liquidising some berries and adding a little fructose as sweetener. That works for me. Good luck.

because there's a different between 45g of carbs in the toast, and 120 carbs in whipped topping...

This sounds so good! I also like the butter with powdered sugar and peanut butter ideas. Maybe even sprinkle a few dark chocoalte chips over the peanut butter. Mmmm

The idea of replacing REAL amazing maple syrup with anything (especially log cabin) kinda hurts my soul.

You know... if you are going to accept the carb intake for the French toast, then you might as well suck it up and accept it for the syrup.

This post confuses me... but then again, I'm not feeling well today.
