New to the site

Hey everyone.
I am Katy-a mom, a wife, and nursing student.I joined this site, hoping I will be able to stay motivated to finally lose this weight! Here is a little back ground on my struggle with weight. Up until I was about 15, I was pretty much your average skinny kid. I wore a size 0 in jeans, and XS in shirts. I was put on some medicine when I was 16, and my weight shot up. By the time I graduated, I was 165. I went through a battle with depression just after graduating, and that added about 15 pounds. On my wedding day, in 2010, I weighed 185.
After my wedding, I started trying to eat healthier and got down to about 178 before I found out I was pregnant. My whole pregnancy was a NIGHTMARE. I was diagnosed with diabetes at 14 weeks pregnant, I had sciatic nerve pain (and could barely walk) from 20 weeks on, had a condition called PUPP, and finally at 37 weeks 6days, swelled up like a balloon and had to be induced for Pre-E. I gave birth to a BEAUTIFUL, 10 lbs 8oz..231/2in, baby boy. The day I had him, I weighed in at 231. After several months of healing (c-section), I started working out daily. I would walk, run, life weights... the works! By December of last year, I was down to 180. I was so proud of myself. Then, of course, something new started. I was diagnosed with SVT. This basically means, my heart pumps way to fast a lot of the time. I had to stop running, which is something I had grown to love. I ended up giving up..AGAIN!
So here I am, 1 year later, and back up to 190 pounds. I went and saw my cardiologist a few weeks ago, and he told me I had to get this weight off. So my "homework" between now and November 5, is to stop drinking soda (done), walk an hour everyday, and drop some of this weight. I want to do this, I NEED to do this. I am 22 years old, I should NOT be having heart issues. My little man needs his momma, and if I don't get the weight off, my heart will just get worse. So, here I am, starting yet another journey to lose the weight. The difference is, now I HAVE to do this, and I WILL succeed. I have no particular goal weight for the end. My first 'goal" would be to be under 170. If I can get there, I will pick a new one. WIsh me luck guys!

  • HI Katy,

Sorry to hear you've had so many struggles with your health, but glad to hear you sound so determined to lose those extra pounds. I know how stressful nursing school is (I am a "retired" RN due to medical reasons). There are exercises that I would like to do that are more hardcore than walking and using the treadmill and light weights, but I have tendonitis in both shoulders and two herniated discs in my lower back that make it too painful.

Anyway, just trying to reach out and letting you know that if I seem like someone you would like to add, please do so.

Meanwhile, best of luck to you with MFP and nursing school.
  • Thank you. Yes, nursing school has been stressful and probably helped pack on the 10 pound I gained back. Hopefully by the time I graduate next year, I will be much healthier.

Hi Katy, I too have health problems. I totally understand what you are going through. I just signed up for MFP too and it looks like we are about the same weithg with the same goals. Let's support each other. Friend me if you want!
  • I am 5'4. According to MFP, my caloric goal is 1200. I am trying to stay between 1200-1500.

What about your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)? You can google it, and you can find several calculators to give you an estimate. You can also do this for Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). Each will give you an estimate and approximate your calorie intake according to your goals. I'm 5' 6", and my BMR is around 1650. BMR is what your body needs to function purely as a couch potato every day.

I used one on Google and it says 1687?

Welcome to the site. I can relate to your issues with SVT. I know someone who had it and I know how scary it can be.

Use the calorie goals, exercise as you can, but remember, even if you can't exercise as long or as hard as you want, 75% of weight loss is a calorie deficit.

I wish you nothing but the best. You can do this.
