Since you're already eating the French Toast, I really wouldn't concern myself with a low carb topping...really, what's the point? My personal preference would be natural maple syrup...satisfy my craving and call it a day and get back on the low carb wagon tomorrow.

because there's a different between 45g of carbs in the toast, and 120 carbs in whipped topping...

My point would be that if you're watching your carbs then this whole thread is full of ridiculous....

No, it isn't. This is exactly the all or nothing attitude that will see 90% of the people here now, back here in 18 months with all their weight to lose AGAIN. If I"m going to eat a calorie dense meal at McDonald's I still get a diet coke, because why add unecessary calories? You don't have to be at one end of the specrum the entire time. it's comfy in the middle too.

And to the OP, I've seen some SF syrups at Walmart in the diabetic section of the pharmacy. Maybe give those a try? I personally smash berries that might be too wrinkley to eat but still good in a little pot. Add a TBSP of real maple syrup and stir in 1TBS chia and it thickens up really nicely. It's still sweet, but not AS SWEET as something liek aunt jemima etc. It's pretty great on waffles, Im sure french toast would be good with it too.

He was speaking to the redundancy of attempting to de-carb French toast. As I said previously, berries actually have more carbs than maple syrup. And if you are adding a TBSP of maple syrup, that's like a half portion of syrup, so you're actually coming out with even more carbs.

Not even close. The berry syrup I make makes 8 1/4 cup portions and it's 25 calories, 6g carb 2 of which are fibre. Maple syrup for 3TBS (which is 1 shy of a quarter cup) is 167 calories and 42 carbs ZERO of which are fibre. So I'm not sure if you're comparing to jam?

Well maybe it's portions that make the difference, but a cup of raspberries is 15g of carbs and a tbsp of maple syrup is only 13g of carbs.

Well if we're comparing a cup of raspberries on top of the toast vs A SINGE tablespoon of maple syrup then YES, you would be right. But that wouldn't really be a fair comparison would it? Will you just put 1TBSP of syrup? If she uses the recipe I gave her she can put 3tbsp of fruit syrup for way less carbs and 2g fibre. We should compare TBSP to TBSP not arbitrary amounts.

ETA: a cup of raspberries also has 8g of fibre, nothing in the maple syrup.

The idea of replacing REAL amazing maple syrup with anything (especially log cabin) kinda hurts my soul.

So as not to hurt your soul, do you mind paying for the difference bewtween the store brand of syrup and real maple syrup? I just want to help you out and wouldn't mind switching.

I am looking for suggestions on how to lower carb, without being too high in calories, intake on french toast. Once I factor in the bread and the syrup, it is already at 52 carbs. I have been using 100% pure maple syrup as I like to avoid HFCS as much as I can.

I appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

Walden Farms Pancake Syrup. 0 Calories, 0 Carbs and 0 Fat. It is wonderful. they also have ketchup, chocolate syrup, chocolate dip, salad dressings, strawberry jams, barbecue sauce. peanut butter and they are all 0 calories, 0 carbs and 0 fat. if you can't find them in your health food store or Walmart or Sprouts Farmers market, then get online www.waldenfarms.com and order online.

I've always wondered about Walden Farms.. if it's 0 everything, WHAT the heck is it?

Real maple syrup is way sweeter, a bit runnier and more delicious.

Oh, I've had it before. Love it! I just can't afford it on a regular basis. We eat way too many pancakes, waffles, french toast, etc. around my house and go through hella syrup. Sometimes I make my own with brown sugar and a bit of vanilla.

We buy it for 10.00 for a glass juice jar of it. My neighbour taps and makes it! Score one for Canada :P

If the bread itself if 45g of carbs, then the syrup is 7g. If one is looking to lower carbs, it's not (just) the syrup that needs changed.

Lucky you! I'm in the middle of the U.S. in an urban area. It's like $8 for a tiny jar that will only last our family of four one or two breakfasts. Meanwhile, the store brand of maple-flavored syrup is like $2 for large container that lasts us a week or so.

Why not have high-carb syrup and throw out the french toast?

    That's my solution.

I feel like we are being trolled by this OP.

I don't mind. Buy it by the gallon. But then, the only thing I use it for is mashed sweet potatoes, but even when I still ate bread, I could only stomach about a tablespoon on a full portion of french toast or pancakes because of the sweetness.

I look at it this way:

Store syrup = vaguely-maple-flavored corn syrup that requires half a cup to be worthwhile on food
Maple syrup = sweet goodness from the trunks of sugar maple trees that only requires a few teaspoons to be worthwhile on food

And, I don't know how much french toast you're eating, but I make mine w just plain bread. Nothing fancy. LOL. That's about 13 carbs for one slice. So, you can have 4 slices and fill up w some protein. Try turkey sausage. OMG. Delicious. Now, you have ME craving french toast. Oh, and add cinnamon. You won't need as much sugar/syrup.

I second the Log Cabin. No HFCS. I like Apple syrup. I forget the exact brand I use. Has the word "cuisine" in the title and has no HFSC. I use it on sweet potato pancakes. I also second the using jam to melt into a syrup.

How much syrup are you using? What kind? For the kind I buy, its 50g of carbs for one 1/4 cup serving.

I've never seen a gallon of it before. I can't imagine how much that would cost where I shop. Maybe it's online somewhere? But then, there's still shipping costs.

My bread is about 20g carbs per slice. I'm think that anything lower probably tastes like cardboard. And turkey sausage is an abomination.

When I eat french toast, I usually don't bother worrying about the calories too much - if I was that concerned, I wouldn't be eating fried bread, to be honest.
However, I do top mine with a very small drizzle of pure maple syrup and lots of fresh fruit (like, a whole banana, 1/2 cup of slice strawberries and a handful of blueberries). So good I don't care about it's caloric "cost".

    Yum!! This sounds great.

And so do many of the other ideas. Thank you everyone

You can make a lighter French toast using liquid eggs and almond milk. French toast doesn't have to be a "no" food

WHAT? Not the bottle I have. One serving is 54g!

    ?

Are you assuming that the OP is on low carb or a ketogenic diet or something?

I was assuming that they wanted some french toast, but didn't want to eat an extra 50 grams of carbs (1/4 cup of maple syrup).
  • I make my own syrup. Just buy imitation maple flavoring. Boil water, add a natural sweetener (I use erythritol since it has 0 calories and 0 sugar), mix in the maple flavoring, and (to thicken it up) add xanthan gum. One tablespoon is about 2 calories.
