Hi Guys - 20's, hypothyroid, and stupid depression

Hi y'all,

I thought I'd stop by and introduce myself. I was diagnosed with hypothyroid last year, after I had gained 40lb in 2012. I've never been the best eater, but it had never effected me like that, so it's been hard sometimes adjusting to my body. That being said, my goal isn't so much a specific weight as it is a healthy and happy body and mind. I've dealt with depression and trauma-related anxiety. I was on paxil before my hypothyroid, which probably didn't help my weight either, lol.

All of that being said, I refuse to shame my body - after all, we all have enough to contend with, right? Sometimes that's hard not to do. I'd like some support in that arena, as I've been getting down on myself lately for my weight. I also could use some ideas for dealing with any upswells of depression/anxiety as well as for losing weight with hypothyroid. It's a lot harder to do, it seems! Or, I just need to do it a different way.

So, if any of you guys have had/have similar struggles - especially those who have managed to overcome them - please feel free to message me and/or friend me. I've always tried this alone because I don't want to disappoint people when I fail. That absolute thinking is what I need to work on permanently changing.

Thanks for reading my post, and hope to see you on the boards :)

Hey there! I know sort of where you are coming from. I just went to the doctor about 6 weeks ago and found out I had hypothyroid and a whole lot of other things were going wrong; I even had a cardiac scare, Yikes! I haven't been diagnosed with clinical depression, but I do find myself down a lot of the time. No friends that live where I do and I have no life outside of work. I'll friend you, let's keep each other motivated :flowerforyou:
  • I have a stressed thyroid and have been asking "why?" and have been reading a lot to try and answer the question. I have found the following texts to be especially helpful: "The Secrets to a Healthy Metabolism" by Maria Emmerich and her blog (http://mariamindbodyhealth.com/category/thyroid/) and the introductory chapters of "Nourishing Traditions."

Our thyroids going awry is often symptomatic of other things happening--and the root cause can sometimes be addressed through diet. I can't encourage you enough to read, read, read.

Personally, I have been taking some supplements per the help of a nutritionist who also uses muscle response testing to determine the body's needs. Also, I've been trying to reduce the sugar in my blood by going high fat low carb. Today I have a follow up appointment and will be interested to see if my thyroid is getting back on track.

Please feel free to message me if you'd like to interact regarding the above sources more.
