When logging in my food, I notice that sometimes I am over my Protein limit, is there such thing as eating too much protein, and what effects does it have on weight loss and general health.

I'm sure there probably is an over limit for the amount of protein you can have but personally I have set my allowances myself as my diet consists of a lot more protein than mosts.

Most body builders and athletes rely on protein to help them build muscle, repair body tissue after a tough work out and generally help them stay healthy xxx

I'm not sure how too much protein affects weight loss, but there is definitely such a thing as eating too much protein. I asked my doctor when I decided I wanted to become vegan, and he said that I should monitor protein but not worry too much because most americans are at a higher risk of getting too much protein than not enough. Here's what I found when I googled it:

Excess protein is stored as fat, granted it is the least likely thing that you eat to be stored as fat. I wouldn't worry if it is 25-30% of your intake and you are exercising regularly.

I'm almost always over my protein. They do seem to set it too low. If it starts to interfere with getting enough of other foods, then worry, but if you're just a little over, that's ok, at least it has been for me so far.

Actually, excess protein is often filtered through the liver and kidneys, which is why too much can cause liver and kidney damage.

However, if you're getting protein from food sources and not those crappy protein powders, you're probably fine. It will only make you gain weight if you're eating too many calories.

The MFP settings for protein are low. It has me at about 20 grams less than recommended. Here's the formula for figuring your needs (and body builders and athletes only need SLIGHTLY more protein and can get it easily from food sources):

Also, I wrote a whole blog post on this subject with more resources: http://lifeissweet16.wordpress.com/2009/12/14/dont-drink-the-kool-aid-or-protein-powder-in-this-case/

Sugar (empty calories), fat and salt are the main numbers you want to keep in check...for health reasons. Protein and veggies are my friends. Cokes/sodas are my bitter enemy. LOL. But if you are trying to lose weight you basically need to make sure total calories consumed are less than total calories burned. You can eat less or exercise more. I prefer to exercise a little more so I don't have to be quite so strict on the calories. Good Luck!

I wouldn't worry about it, as long as your kidneys are good and you don't have diabetes. For diabetics, no more than 4 ounces per day. Diabetes causes kidney damage among other things, so you need to help them by keeping the protein low.
