Junk and food of no nutritional value

I try to eliminate them as much as possible but also don't become a drama llama when I have some.
I've never subscribed to "a calorie is a calorie", because for me it's not just about thinness but about health. And I like elements of IIFYM, but I don't like the way some people seem to interpret this as "as long as your basic macros are met, the rest can be a load of crap". Seems a pointless attitude...
^ This. It seems a lot of people are in this for fitness or weight loss rather than health, ignoring basic nutrition. We need vitamins, minerals, fibre to stay HEALTHY.
That's because you don't understand IIFYM or Flexible Dieting Principles. You are meant to hit your macros, micros, and fiber and then fill in the rest of calories with whatever you please. You do not get extra credit for eating "extra clean" or "extra healthy".
Yup this!! QFT!!0 -

I understand how it works. Look at my diary. I do exactly as you said. Perhaps read what was said prior to responding. There are people here who are only eating crap and there is not a chance they are getting their 'micros', fibre/nutrients. I have seen their diaries.0 -
I can't commit to such a thing. Hasn't hurt my progress at all!0

I think you'd probably be surprised how many people who eat 'crap' actually make their macros and micros. I had delivery pizza and wings for lunch; still hit fat and protein, my micros, and got in more fiber than you today. I have ice cream (a serving or two) with cookies or a brownie nearly every night, fast food a handful of times a week, but I hit all of my numbers by the end of the week.
I think you think you know some things, but in reality have no idea.0 -
Has anyone on here committed to eliminating all junk food and artificial sugar from their diet - for good?
I like to believe I have, since I feel that if I ingest even the smallest amount of it, my whole day is ruined - nutrition wise. It seems that I am only motivated to keep losing weight and eating healthy if I never eat any sort of junk. How do you feel about junk food?
Arbitrarily eliminating foods, and then feeling "ruined" because you ate some is an incredibly unhealthy mindset to be in. It's a terrible relationship with food, as it's the opposite extreme of the person who eats nothing but cheetos and soda all day. Neither approach is ideal.0 -
Sunday is the day I treat myself. We're going to lunch at this little restaurant that makes the best homemade burgers and fries I will still be in my calorie goal, and I'll workout to burn some calories. I can't deprive myself.0
-
I eat it all, no guilt about anything, just bring it and I'll consume it (Brussel sprouts excepted).
Most of the time it's "whole" foods by preference though, I don't have a hankering for most 'junk' these days.
I've read a heap of pro-'clean' eating stuff, it's all very interesting but when it comes to looking good nekkid it doesn't make a blind bit of difference to my goals, which are spectacularly superficial, no point in pretending otherwise.
The fewer nutritional rules I have the better.0 -

I think you have no idea what I know or do not know. I base my observations on what I have seen. I don't base it on your diary which I did not see. You also have no idea what I consider crap.0 -

Well I did I say 'I think' which means it's my opinion on the matter based off of my observations on what I've seen you say this far in this thread. Kind of like what you think is based off your observations. My opinion is no more or less based off of observation than yours, which makes it just as valid, as far as I can tell.
But for the sake of letting you add further observations, show us an example of a person claiming to use IIFYM and eating nothing but what you consider to be crap.0 -
I cut out all junk. All processed foods and refined sugar were eliminated. I don't care about anybody else's macro/micro/macho/me know. I feel healthier, whether I am or not. I know I'm happier and more energetic and that's inarguable. And when I have extra calories, if my nutrients have been met, then there's no point filling up on junk just because the numbers say I can when I don't want it in the first place. I think that's really the only difference. People who want to eat junk will find a way to justify it. I don't feel deprived snacking on an apricot instead of a bag of Doritos. I feel lucky I can.0

Note where it says: BASIC MACROS ARE MET.
I'm not going to out people on my FL. I'm going to try to guide them so that they are doing it correctly, perhaps the way you are. It is probably easier for you to cover all your bases because, if I remember correctly from some of your other posts, your calorie intake is quite a bit higher than theirs.0 -
Junk food is responsible for a lot of obesity in our societies.
Ben
Nope, we are.0 -
I gave up junk food and i never crave it.i feel great. it doesnt even tempt me0
-
I always allow myself treats, because that's the only way I can keep myself sane. I'll usually have some form of chocolate every day (usually under 100cals) and if my will power is low, an energy drink at work (while I skip my lunch break to get more done). Junk food is great, IIFYM!
Ugh your Hannibal pic is creeeeepy.0 -
My husband likes to research food, ad now he won't let me have diet drinks because of aspartame
He doesn't research that thoroughly then, there's nothing wrong with aspartame!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartame_controversy
But anyhow, if it fits in with my calories I'll eat it! But whereas I'd demolish a whole large takeaway pizza before, now it'll only be a few slices of a medium or a whole small/individual pizza.
Monsanto has a huge lobby in Washington. They also have lots of money. When I was in nursing school we were taking benign tumors from behind the eye that actually had aspartame in them. It's bad stuff. Eat it and likely nothing will happen to you but it does cause problems.0 -

I believe in healthy eating but if you feel you an go through the rest of your life w/o a piece of cake I fear your in for quite a letdown at some point :-)0

Haha same case as you. If I eat junk food even if I am not over the calories intake. I still feel like I am ruined for the whole day.. probably not very good to be so since sometimes it is good to have a little junk in moderation.
I agree. There's really nothing wrong w junk food in moderation. If you deny yourself these things and finally cave in one day, that could lead to binging or just giving up if you see it as a failure. I choose to see eating junk food as a treat now, and not as something bad.0 -
There is no such thing as food with no nutritional value. Calories are nutritional value...ask a starving person.0

Actually you're right and I apologize for my hostility. I don't like the way some people portray iifym as something people do to justify eating crap. Also I got a rude pm today and its made me defensive. And, of course, the fact I eat like a pig helps with getting in all my stuffs.
So, again, I apologize.0 -
Yes on eliminating the artificial sweeteners. They pique my appetite and I don't need that kind of encouragement so they are now completely out of the picture.
On a day-to-day basis, I avoid junk. There's too much good food to eat within my calorie limits. No room for junk except for the occasional splurge -- and even then, I'd rather splurge on homemade bread and butter, or good cheese, or a trip to a local barbecue buffet that makes all its own food.0 -

Seriously, beyond fiber, eggplant is about as nutritionally void as food gets.0 -

Even though I have an all or nothing approach on many things I can not eliminate anything from my diet without feeling deprivation which leads to binging on that item. With diet I have found that eating healthy, and keeping everything in moderation, including moderation is my best friend.:drinker:0

Better tell the FDA their research is wrong, then. Maybe they should have just read the Wikipedia page drafted by the manufacturer and skipped those silly test studies.
