Grits

Well I just tried grits for the first time, I really enjoyed them! I know they are not as nutritionally beneficial as oatmeal, but it's nice to break the oatmeal breakfast up, every once in a while.

Anyone have any suggestions on good ways to eat them? I heard in the North it is more common to eat them sweet, and in Southern states they usually have them more savory.

Shrimp and Grits or Bacon and Grits are awesome.

I like my grits savory, so I'd make them any way I'm craving risotto. But you can add some brown sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon and wham, dessert for breakfast.
  • I tried them with cinnamon and a little butter last night and it was goooood. Brown sugar soounds good too.

Never thought of having meat with them, will have to try that!

I didn't know they had grits up North. Sweet grits just sound wrong.

Breakfast grits should be eaten with salt and butter. The addition of cheese is acceptable.

Shrimp and grits for dinner is phenomenal if done right.

Lol I didn't either! I am from Ohio and have barely ever seen them. My boyfriend loves them, he is from Ohio too but a much smaller country town. He eats his with sugar, honey and milk. WAYYY sweet! He wouldn't even consider putting butter, salt and pepper on lol.

Hey we people in the north know what grits are and do eat them believe it or not...to me putting cheese in grits is just wrong. Anyway...I love mine with a little salt and very small amount of butter...yes butter the real stuff!

One of my favorite splurge foods.....Smoked Gouda Grits. I make them about twice a month because my kids prefer them as a side dish over mashed pot or mac/cheese. They are cooked in chicken stock & milk with white pepper, then a small wheel of grated smoked gouda is added. And butter, of course! Yum!!

I like grits with butter and a bit of brown sugar for breakfast or with bacon and sharp cheddar.

I agree, sweet grits just sounds wrong. Salt and butter is the only way to go, unless you want to add some cheese, bacon, or as stated shrimp!

I was raised with grits and maple syrup for breakfast. It's how my mom's family did it when Grandpa served in the military. So delicious!

Bacon is good. I also sometimes put a little cheese. Scrambled eggs is good mixed in with grits, too!

my favorite way to eat grits is with black pepper and real butter.

I live right on the ya'll/you guys line. How you eat your grits and whether grits are even palatable are fistfight-worthy debates amongst the early breakfast crowd.

My mom--northern, couldn't stomach grits. My dad--from the keys, ate his grits with shrimp.

I had such a poor experience with cream of wheat when I was a kid. Grits or polenta just remind me of that texture and I can barely get past it. Allthough I did serve chicken cacciatore served over polenta the other night and my boyfriend loved them!
