So I just got the new issue of self magazine, which I forgot I had a subscription to, and they have a 7 day detox plan in it. Normally I don't go for plans purposed in magazines but I read through this one and it seems like I decent kick start idea and do-able. I'm going to have to adapt it a little for what is available to me and to a vegan diet though. Basically it breaks down to 30 to 45 minutes of cardio every morning and strength training 3 evenings the first, second, and 4th day. The meals are a smoothing for breakfast (350 cal) and then lunch and dinner (450 cal) focusing on los of produce and whole grains and then a snack at 150 calories. It has a "detox elixir" it suggests twice a day but I may pass on that and just make sure I drink lots of water. Gonna give this a go starting tomorrow.

    If you poop and pee, you are already detoxed. Your body does a dang good job by itself without the help of things you see in a magazine.

    Honestly just why?
    At least this one gives you more calories than a lot of them, but why do you feel the need to detox?

    Eat the right foods that don't poison you and drink water, you will find that to be all the detoxing you require. Exercise is a massive help too!

    Exactly what toxins are you trying to get rid of?

    If detox was necessary, anyone NOT doing them would already be extinct...

    How is this a detox? You workout for 7 days, have a smoothie for breakfast, then eat a lunch and dinner focused on grains and produce with a snack? Sounds just like eating better. Maybe I am reading it wrong.

    its not really that I feel the need to detox but having a set of guidelines to work off of helps me out. Just being able to say "I'm going to do this" is a bonus for me. Plus what I saw in the magazine just kind of gave me a guideline and idea.

    And I have digestive problems so my body doesn't detoxify itself the way it should. So anything that may help get my system moving a little better is worth a try.

    I agree it doesn't really seem like a detox....though it does give you a list of "detoxing foods" but as I said think it will be a little extra guidance for me.

    Before you do this I would calculate your TDEE and make sure that the calories fit within an acceptable range of your TDEE.
    Then I would try to eat more fiber to see if that will help your digestion. Not sure what you mean by digestive problems, but if it's more serious than needing more fiber you should consult with a doctor to isolate a medical condition.

    I like the idea of a detox plan as well. I struggle with focus and look for what I can include as "small steps". I'm currently doing 30 day "detox". By detox I mean:
    1. No alcohol
    2. Preparing all my own meals
    3. Increased whole foods - increased by amount and how many days of just whole foods over the 30 days

    Many people who are on MFP would see these steps as what is needed for the full commitment. I find if I start with timelimits it's much less overwhelming and realistic. I can find what works for me. If this is difficult to follow I will try "detoxing" from something else in the future.

    If you have a medical condition that affects your body's ability to adequately eliminate waste from your system, I would not rely on trendy diet advice from Self magazine.

    Try discussing with a doctor or nutritionist to get solid professional advice.

    Not sure where all these Toxinz are coming from, but it seems like a lot of people are concerned about them. Personally, I make it a habit not to consume arsenic or ingest cadnium. That's just me. ;P

    Cleanse by bathsheba_c

    To cleanse or not to cleanse? That is the question.
    Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
    The slings and arrows of non-specific toxins
    Or to take arms against a sea of imagined bowel obstructions
    And by opposing, perforate one's colon. To juice; to detox;
    No more; and by a detox to say we end
    The pH and the balance of intestinal flora
    That guts are heir to, 'tis a consummation
    Devoutly to be avoided. To juice; to detox;
    To detox: perchance to puke: aye, there's the rub;
    For in the pangs of indigestion what side-effects may come
    When we go and leave our undies soiled.

    I will make sure everything works out to be safe and healthy as possible before trying anything as I want to be as healthy and effective as possible.
    I have seen a doctor for my digestive problems I do eat a high fiber diet and take probiotics but some times its still not enough and any medications the doctor has prescribed the cons outweighed the pros so I stopped taking them.

    Detox label aside, it sounds like a reasonable heatlhy plan from what you've posted. I'd say go for it, if you want.

    So again, would not recommend adjusting a potentially fragile balance in your digestive system based on grocery-aisle publications. If this is a route you want to take, do research, consult a medical professional/dietician, and adjust your diet accordingly, hopefully in incremental steps.

    I *loathe* fad diets with a passion. The harm they do to people is far worse than the miracle snake-oil results they promise.

    It's tongue-in-cheek sarcasm. There's a lot of "bro-science" out there about the Ebils ov deh Toxinz!

    Some of the community is perhaps a little sensitized to the term... Hence the varied responses. :)

    I poison myself with 12oz toxins on weekends occasionally. The aftereffects the next morning generally are my de-tox period

    So, basically, exercise and eat a deficit of calories in healthy, well-balanced food?

    Man, I could make so much money just selling the way I live my life to people and calling it something catchy.

    I like your idea! I really need to try a similar "detox" -- making my own meals and not just grabbing a frozen box is a serious challenge for me.

    the best detox in the world is BOOZE
    plain and simple
    lots of it.
  • Wooooooow to the word "Detox" trolls. None of you actually have a problem with the plan her mag outlined... Just eating cleaner, watching calories and exercising.

    If they and she want to call getting off processed foods and upping the exercise "detoxing" then let them. Last time I checked that would contain less chemicals and ingredients and thus make the criteria for the definition of the word "detox".

    That was the part that stuck out and guided my original response. I hope you do pass on that elixir. :flowerforyou:
