I'm not new to MFP but I am new to actually working hard at this. I have been working out 5 days a week for three weeks. I have gained 5 pounds in that time. My diary is open and I don't know what is going on. I'm trying my best when I work out and have just recently quit smoking so I have to build myself up. If anyone can give me workout tips and daily diet tips or recipes I would greatly appreciate it. Feeling really discouraged right now.

I'm sure you'll get some great help from people more knowledgable then me. Great that you're working out regularly, but I looked at your diary and there was lots of processed food and IMO not nearly enough protein, veggies and fruit from whole natural foods.
Great that you quit smoking. I am a former smoker and I know how difficult it is to quit.

I have dealt with the very thing you are talking about. When I first stared working out I noticed that I bloated and gained a bit of water weight. This should eventually go away. It could also be that you are not eating enough or enough of the right things. Counting calories are a great place to start, but the quality of food also matters. If you want send me a message and I can take a look at your diary and help you tweak it a bit if need be. Know that you are not alone and you can do this!!

Starting an exercise program can result in up to 10lbs of water and glycogen storage. Normal.

Best tip: stay consistent even when it seems nothing may be happening. Weight loss isn't linear.

Get rid of the slimfast and eat some proper food is the first thing that springs to mind looking at your diary

Looking at your diary some days you don't enter and some you go over your calories. Cut out the Mcdonalds, slim fast and other processed foods.
Eat more fruit, veg, chicken, fish, dairy, pulses, wholegrains etc.

I agree with the others on replacing those slimfast shakes and bars with real food, something that isn't already prepared and packaged for a quick nuke in the microwave, either. Also, you are eating out every day, big hearty meals that cost you double your sodium and restaurants are infamous for serving way more than single serve portions. Even if we get the nutritional facts off a restaurant's website, we have no control over whether the person plopping it onto the plate is precisely giving the correct quantity or being heavy handed with it. That's why it's so much better to stay in control and make your own meals when it comes to weight loss.

^This. Focus on fat loss vs weight loss. The scale only tells part of the story. Stay consistent and use a tape measure to really gauge results. As for what others are saying about your diet, for weight (fat) loss purposes it is calories in vs calories out. You can eat out at McDonalds consistently and lose weight. You don't have to restrict your food choices. Quality of food, "whole" vs processed doesn't matter. Anyone telling you that you have to eat 100% clean, whole, unprocessed foods to lose weight is wrong. A caloric deficit will lead to weight loss. Plain and simple. Consistently tracking your calories and maintaining a defict, determination and pushing yourself in the gym will yield results.
