Best Running Shoes for Wide Feet and Bad Ankles?

OK, I turn it over to the masses.

I have been running in my mid top football turf shoes with the Velcro ankle braces and from what I have been reading, that may be part of my problem :)

What I need to know is what is the best shoe I can get for running in a 12 4E size and what ankle braces are the best or with the right shoe; do you not need to wear braces?

My ankles hurt like heck most of the time so I want to do what is best.

I was thinking New Balance 1226 but that is just cause I always get NB because they are easiest to find in the extra wide widths.

  • My husband and I swear by asics running shoes - great support for feet and ankles xxx
  • Visit your local running shoe store. They can offer advice on what kind of support you need for a shoe and have a myriad of shoes you can try on.

Sounds like you need a stability shoe (and probably not an ankle brace). Go to your local running store (http://www.runnersworld.com/store/search/1,7978,s6-240-417-0-0,00.html) and get fitted.

I have a bad ankle and don't need to wear a brace and they fitted me with Mizunos, but it really is going to depend on how your foot strikes the ground.

    Good luck!

Yes, I hear the best thing to do is to go to a specialty running shoe store that will measure you for a shoe. They look at your size, how you run/walk, the type of activity you do, etc. I want to get fitted for a running shoe soon. It's a bit more pricey than just going to a sporting goods store.
  • You might want to try an off-road/trail shoe. Give the Shoe Dog app at roadrunnersports.com a try or look into what they mark as their motion control shoes. I had luck with finding a great shoe to go with my overpronation problem.

Have you talked to your doctor or a podiatrist? What is the actual source of the pain?

I have a 12 4E and I have always had luck with about any new balance shoe for support, I would also suggest getting an insole for about an extra $20, the sole on any shoe now a days is little more than paper
