Oatmeal for supper?

I am alone tonight and thinking of having a bowl of oatmeal with a side of fruit for dinner. I don't want to sound silly... But does it matter that it has lots of carbs before I am going to bed? Any opinions/ info would be much appreciated!

If you're good on protein and fat for the day, then might as well.

Might retain a bit of water and weigh in a little heavier than you would have with a low carb dinner, but it's just water weight. Carbs don't magically turn to fat while you sleep or something.

I have carbs for dinner all the time (oatmeal too!) I try to make sure I got enough protein and fat earlier in the day.
  • 1 pound of fat = 3,500 calories. Depending on how you prepared it it won't have much more than 150-350 calories in it. So unless you're 3,000 calories over your maintenance goal already, it won't do much at all except count as a normal meal.

Oatmeal has the benefit of providing slow energy, meaning it takes longer to break down and gives more consistent values. Which makes it ideal for breakfast, but can also help make breakfast the next morning smaller since you won't be too hungry.

You'll probably find that you sleep really well.

Eat it up. I often have oatmeal as my late night snack!

I often have oatmeal for dinner, always baked, usually savory or...um, pizza-y as opposed to sweet/fruity. But if sweet is your thing, have at it. :)

I have oatmeal for dinner a lot in the evenings when the weather turns cooler. I don't get home from the gym/pool until after 8pm so it's quick, filling, low in cals, and a decent amount of protein. And it's a complex carb with lots of fiber.

I use steel cut oats, thawed frozen berries, a tsp of Splenda brown sugar and a 1/2 cup of skim milk. If I have the calories I'll throw in a 1/2 oz of walnuts.
