Gym membership going to waste

I have a gym membership I'm not using. I'm not sure why but I've developed this dislike for the gym where I used to go EVERYDAY. I don't like how loud it is, how busy it is... etc. I don't feel like trying any of the classes available because there are conducted out in the open anyone using the weights or cardio machines can see. I also feel like I'm at a different stage of loss now- I've lost the bulk of my weight (50 pounds) and now I want to lose like 5+ more pounds and maintain. I really want an elliptical machine for my house- that's mostly all I used at the gym anyway but my membership is until like February.. whats a girl to do!? I shouldn't spend $ on an elliptical when I'm paying for the membership! Advise? Any tricks on getting out of your membership early? Thanks!

I feel exactly the same way. The noise alone make me want to walk right back out the door. I've been doing lots of walking/jogging and riding my bike. Maybe I'll change my mind when the cold weather comes.

Can you sell your membership to someone else? Sometimes clubs allow that....might be an option to look into.

Nope. You're stuck. That's what happened to me anyway. Those contracts are super binding and follow you around until you pay up! I tried so hard to get out of mine even when I moved outta state but they had that same gym in California so my membership transfered. NEVER EVER again will I sign a membership at a gym! That's not to say others have not had wonderful experiences with them. :)

Most of the time, you can put your membership on hold. They will stop charging you, and usually they forget all about you and never restart it.

Have you tried wearing an MP3 while at the gym to block out some of the noise.

I love going to the gym and do it on my lunch hour. It's part of my daily routine. I get motivated seeing people at different fitness levels.

Do you have someone you could go with? I stick to the back of the room during classes. I've just started trying different classes or ones I haven't done for a while to mix it up.

For me- when I signed up at the gym I made sure that in the event I lost my job they'd cancel my membership with no fines. I'm in MI so I was really concerned I'd be stuck with a membership with no way to pay. Well I found a better gym that's cheaper and has daycare so I told my old gym I lost my job. Done.

Maybe you can try that? Or try transferring it into someone elses name. (Selling it.) I know a friend of mine did that at her gym.

If your not a gym girl you should look into investing is good home workouts on DVDs. There are plenty out that that will give you results if you put in the effort

Exercise is the key to keeping off the weight. So stay encouraged about the gym. My suggestion is to try and go during none peak hours. Sometimes when it dead inside the gym you can actually focus on your workout or just relax. Also try going first thing in the morning to get it over with. That way anxiety about going does not build up during the day. Good luck!

Thanks all! I'm going to try the "lost my job" bit! haha! Hopefully they'll give me some options! I really am not a gym girl- not anymore anyway... when I really needed results it was great. I made great progress and I had a gym buddy then so I was obligated to meeting my friend everyday. Now I just want to be able to hop on the elliptical while dinner is in the oven, etc. and not have to drive to the busy gym where I wouldn't likely get to use the machine I wanted to anyway. I also recently purchased a Roku box (it's a Neflix streaming devise) and it has a ton of work outs on it I can use at home.
