2 races in 1 day?

I am registered for a 10K race on September 21st, that I have been planning on doing for a few months. It's in the morning at 7 am. My friend invited me to do a super fun 5K that is on the same time at 8 pm. I have been running for a year and a half, but haven't logged 9 miles in one day since I was training for a half marathon. Should I go for it? I think it's probably do-able, I just don't know if I have reached that mental level of craziness yet. :P

Go for it! Nobody said you had to go fast :)
  • Do it. You should be just fine. And you still have a few weeks to prep.
  • I say do it. It can be an achievement!

If you're hoping for a personal best on the 10K probably not; if you treat both as fun, slow runs you could probably do it. You've got time to eat and rest between the races....

Assuming you're already hitting 10km or close to it try running (slowly) a double one day - the second run needn't be the full 5km just to see how fatigued you feel.

If you get some rest, why not? Just don't make a habit of it!!

At a race I ran there was more than one person who ran the 5K, got a ride back to the starting line, then ran the 10K. And they came in first and second in each! The guy who got second in both, actually started the 10K 10 seconds late, too! I'm sure they trained for it, though. If you think you can do it, go for it. Just eat well in between and rest and stretch.
  • My thought as far as it relates to me (because I'm no running expert but I'm enjoying the thrill of it) is SURE, it's doable. In the 5K, you may be a little sore and slower than normal, but if you have all day between the two... I know my recovery time even for a 10K is generally quick and I've been doing 10Ks since the first of the year, so it's doable. If the 5K is for fun and is a fun theme, even better. You won't feel pressured to run a fast race in it. if it were me, I'd do it and just plan on having fun thru the 5K (no attempt at a PR). Enjoy.

Agreed. Just last Saturday I did my 9 mile training run in the morning and then a 5k fun run that night. No problems except slightly sore the next day but I attribute most of that to weeding my garden in between the runs.

Rock it like red and white stripes. Just go easy on the 5k if you need to.
