How to get started with so much to loose

Yes, I know the obvious answer is to get up off the couch and put one foot in front of the other and go. But when everything you have tried thus far does not work and you think of how long it will take you to reach your goal how do you find the motivation. What helped you in your journey when was your wake up call that made you say this is it I am changing my life and how did you start?

Time passes no matter what. I accepted that it didn't matter how long it would take me to reach my goal, just that I kept working toward it. Consistency over the long-term is what matters.
If something isn't working (plateau, very little loss, a gain, whatever), I re-evaluate what I'm doing and try something different. I've had to change my calorie count up and down to find the right balance. I've changed up my exercise and focused on fitness goals, not a scale weight.
It's about accepting it's a lifestyle change that makes you feel incredibly good about yourself and working towards that. Success is really about never quitting, no matter how many times you "fail". Just keep at it.0 -
Okay but your photo it doesn't look like you have "so much to loose"? But who knows I guess. What made me know that is was time is when I was 15 pounds below 300 pounds, I knew I never wanted to get to that 300 pound mark. And one day I got on the scale and said I try MFP about a year before and did it for a week but gave up how about I try it again. And 7 months later I am still at it and down about 50 pounds. Not sure what your status are how much your are trying to loose and all that stuff. you should add more info to the post and we may be able to help more. Best of luck to you0

I'm trying to find out the same answer. No matter what I do, weight isn't going anywhere lately.0

After 2 years, I still weighed the same exact weight I was the day I gave birth. Ok... I'm over it. My clothes consisted of yoga pants and t-shirts bc I didn't want to get comfortable in a certain size. I finally was just fed up!!! I want my outer beauty to compliment my heart. I deserve this, I thought.... Now get your fat a** off the couch!
It has been gradual... I have days where I don't work out, days where I eat like crap... and that's ok. I'm not perfect, but I'm better than I was and everyday gets better.0 -
If you look at the big picture the entire time, it'll seem impossible. I recommend taking it in increments. I chose 10 pound increments because I had 100 pounds to lose. Ten pounds is way less intimidating than 100.0

^this...
"so much to lose!" What do you think you have to lose? 30 or 40 or 50 or 100 lbs?
Guess what you don't you only have 1 pound to lose and that's the next one.
A friend of mine go tired of hearing me whine about my weight losing 50 pounds seems overwhelming to me.
She said... just lose the first 5 and I did then. I'd also done some research and found out that 50 lbs was not a realistic goal for me. That 15 pounds would just about get me into the health range and that 30-35 lbs would put dead center of the range. And that would give me a little wiggle room for learning how to live and eat for a healthy life.
I've seen so many friends ratchet themselves up by yo-yo dieting. I was sacred silly of that. So it was slow and steady for me. 1 lb a week until MFP gave me 1200 cal then down to 1/2 lb a week. I took 15 months to lose and I've been maintaining for almost 2 years months. I still drop in and out of MFP for a reality check and to tweak my eating plan when I feel like i'm going off course.0 -
The start is the best part!!
First, congratulate yourself when the scale stops moving to the right.
Then celebrate the 1st pound lost, then be very patient, consistent and see more pounds fall off.0 -
The time will pass whether or not you move towards your goals. The choice is yours0

Just recently as I was being rather slack (life getting on top of me etc) - I ate a massive Chinese meal, which left me bloated enough that I couldn't keep saying "well, it's not getting THAT bad"0

It's like anything else in life. If you look at the whole picture it can be. Overwhelming. That's why we take it one day/one step/one pound at a time. You don't know in advance if *this time* is going to work. I don't know what was different for me - I've been on many diets in my life but there was something different about MFP from day one, has it been perfect? No. Would I like to lose more/faster? Yes. But In the long run I'm happy with my progress.0

Um............if that pic is representative of someone who has a lot to LOSE.......................
we're all in trouble.
really???????????????????????????? that cannot be your pic, so DO TELL.....................what's the problem???
LOSE? i DON'T SEE IT.0 -
I've only started on this journey as well and I know that looking at the whole thing can be intimidating. So I've set myself 5 kilo goals. And I've attached a non-food reward each goal. So far I've lost the first five kilos and got my first reward which is a book. The next goal has a reward of shoes attached. This way I only have to focus on small increments. My husband lost 25 kilos through this technique. My brother only has 16 pounds to lose so he's set goals of 5 pounds for himself.
There's also the famous Chinese saying that I keep in mind currently, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."0 -
If you had started one year ago, what would you weigh now? Time flies when you're eating an elephant one bite at a time.0

I imagine that this thread is either rhetorical or for the benefit of others after looking at your profile pics but I will take the bait.
Best place to start is well starting, simple in theory, not so simple in practice.
Just start moving more eg walk when possible, take the stairs, just keep moving.
Start paying attention to food portions and why you are eating.
Start researching for exercise routines...be realistic, be safe, develop consistency.
Keep busy.
Develop a healthy relationship with food and your body.
Be honest with yourself.
Stop blaming others, it is your life ultimately, your responsibility.
etc
Do this for you.0
