Bruised back from Pilates?

Hey everybody! I recently started doing Pilates to maintain my weight instead of loosing any more (I've lost too much so my body is very weak).. Whenever I do roll ups or just simply hug my knees and roll to stretch my back, my whole spine bruises! All along my spine! I have a small bruise over each bone starting from my shoulder blades going down to my tailbone.
I don't want to stop Pilates but the pain is so sore! Any tips, suggestions and is this normal?

If you're bruising that easily, then I seriously advise you speak to your doctor immediately.

Aha! This explains why the dancers in my head always have bruised back sides. And knees.

Are you using a mat? Make sure you have a thick enough mat. If that doesn't work then you my need to strength and stretch a different way

I do use a mat but I can't call it thick.. I'll buy myself a new mat and if that doesn't work, then I'll visit a doctor!

    Thanks!

Buy a nice thick pilates mat. Also buy some workout clothes that protect your back a little.

I didn't get bruised, but at first Pilates did hurt my spine (rolling like a ball was pure hell), but I got a thicker mat at that helped.

Also, standing Pilates would be an alternative.
  • I got into this thing before a major surgery that I wanted to do 300 sit ups/day to prepare myself for recovery. I did it well enough, but had to stop because I got a gross rug burn on the skin over my tailbone. The scar is still there. That's all I can think of with your issue is possible rug burn. If it's truly bruising, have your doc check it out.
