Push back the plate and turn down dessert! Losing weight is about the diet. Lift heavy if you want firmer muscle.

Exercise bike for cardio, always gets heart rate up.

Lunges with kettlebells are my favourite weight exercise.
  • Boy do I feel embarrassed, but thanks for letting me know. :blushing:

I'm on day 23 of Jillian Michael's 30 day shred. On day 20, I was down 2.25" in my waist. I highly recommend it.

    GODfidence advice is good.

Unfortunately, a person cannot affect which part of his body will lose inches first; its a genetic thing. As you lose fat, your body will make that choice for you.
  • Anybody else out there have any advice/hints???

  • I thought this was a forum where people could ask for help or advice,

I was just looking for some different exercises that help you lose inches the fastest. Why are you wasting my time with your answers that have no content. If you can help great if not go do something productive,

I think squats with a dumbell are a good full body workout move. If you raise the dumbell above your head when you come up you can feel it working arms and core as well as your legs

Lift weights. Your weight loss will be slower and you may even gain a little in the beginning as your muscles retain water for repair but you'll drop inches well with lifting weights (as heavy you can do)
  • THANK YOU!! This is the kind of information I was looking for.

Google compound lifts as they work more than one area of the body at a time

I think what DevPaul is trying to say is that there is no particular exercise that makes you lose inches the fastest. Everyone is different, with different lean body mass percentage versus fat percentage, both these factors have an effect on fat loss (which is the same as inches lost). The only way to ensure you will lose inches (fat) is to control what you eat, eat a a deficit and move, doesn't matter if it's just walking; the inches will come off because you are burning fat. Period. Stop looking for the quick fix. Do what works for you. If it's walking 2.0 mph, do that, if you want to do P90X/Jillian Michaels, do that, if you want to elliptical/treadmill/running, then just do that. Add weight to build more muscle. All of these will help you lose inches. But the number one way to lose inches is...EAT AT A DEFICIT. period.

I think people are misunderstanding your question. You are looking to lose inches, not from any particular place. It does need to be a combo of cardio and strength. What worked well for me were exersises that engaged several muscle groups. For example squats holding dumbbells followed by a shoulder press. I also alternate exercises when lifting instead of taking a break. Might do kettlebell swings then a sprint. If you have not been exercising, any vigorous activity will do it. I lost inches before pounds I ignored the scale completely the first year. A good trainer can put together a workout that meets your needs, or perhaps someone here can recommend a good DVD. I am partial to bodyweight exercises that can be done anywhere. Planks, squats, lunges, pushups.:drinker: Drink your water.
  • Anything for the obliques. I really like cable exercises for obliques.

Unfortunately there are no simple answers....and evryone seems to have their own view. What I found worked for me is a combination:

1 - eat at a calorie deficit, with careful attention to measuring and recording caloric input/output.
2 - cardio at a heart rate high enough to burn fat; if you are fit enough, high intensity training for shorter time periods supposedly burns fat better than longer periods of steady cardio.
3 - strength training to build muscle on alternate days; this works two ways, more muscles burn calories at a higher rate and do your workouts at a cardio rate (minimal rest between sets and reps).

For all of these set both short term and long term goals. then add a dose of patience, planning and perserverence.

    Good luck!
  • Thank you for all of the answers I received. I guess my question wasn't clear. I was looking for exercises that would help lose inches the quickest. An example is instead of doing arm curls I would do compound exercises instead.

Definitely not looking for a quick fix just exercises that will help me tone faster I guess is how I should have put my question. Thank you though to those who helped.

I'm new at this and am looking for some advice on how to get the most from my exercises.

    Hi,
Depending on how much weight you want to lose / have to lose there are lots of different option for women of our age...
I love the Jillian Michaels DVDs and have done 3 sets of 30DS and now do the Extreme Shed and Shred about 4/5 times a week. It helps me lose inches and tone. I also do lots of running which I have built up to slowly. Pilates and Yoga are supposed to be very good for toning too but I don't enjoy them!!
Take time to try lots of things, you will find a lot of people on here telling you what will work for you but ultimately it's a bit of trial and error until you find something that fits into your life, you enjoy and works for you.
Eat at a deficit, do some exercise and you'll see the changes...
    Good Luck Jules xx
  • So far, the best results I've had losing inches wise is with the workout INSANITY. I am finishing up the second week and have lost an inch off my waist and hips so far. Hoping the losses continue through the rest of the 60-day program.

I am currently doing the 30 Day Shred and I could see/feel a difference after the first week. It's tough for me to get through it, but it's getting easier and it really does seem to produce results. Good Luck!!

I've found Jillian Michael's 30 day shred is working for me. I am 25 days into the 30 day shred and so far I've lost about 4.5 LBs and I've lost 2" in my chest, 1" in my upper arm, 2" in my waist and 1/2" in my hips so far. The inches are coming off. There is a 30 Day Shred group on here, go look at some before and afters, and see what 30 days could do for you.
