Heart Rate

So I have been doing P90X and some martial arts (along with playing league level hockey) and I have noticed in the last month or so that I am having difficulty getting my heart rate up into the normal zone where I burn max calories? All else is the same - maintaining my healthy diet - maintaining my goal weight and my intensity levels feel right (soaked after my workouts) - I have just seemed to notice that during the peak workouts (like Plyometrics) where I could normally hit like 165 on my HRM, I am only getting up to 145-150.

Is my body just adapting and becoming more efficient to these workouts now? Should I shake things up and change to a new workout (I was thinking about Insanity).

Any opinions appreciated!

Your body will get more efficient, you will get in better shape where you will be able to push yourself harder. You might benefit from adapting to another work out like insanity, it's not going to hurt anything to mix it up. How long have you been doing P90X?

Also remember, while the higher heart rate might be best for raising cardio endurance if you are looking for fat burning a lower zone is actually better for fat burning. It's based on what your goals are.

Thanks for the response. Doing P90x for 2 years now and have had great success with it (shed 40 pounds in the first year and now maintaining for the 2nd year).

My goals are to maintain my current fitness and level of muscularity. I have a bit more fat I would like to burn, but at age 46, I am not worked up over it - overall I am very happy with my fitness level and appearance.

Only reason I had any concern was that I know the human body is "smart" - even though I rotate my P90X cycles still and mix in martial arts workouts, I just don't want my body to adapt and then put weight back on..

The body certainly does not make it easy - you have to constantly trick it, it seems! :)
