Starting again

I started using the MFP app on my iTouch, but it had a mishap. I found it a bit inconvenient to only use it on the computer. Now, after finally having enough money to fix my iPod, I'm motivated to start working toward my fitness goals once more. I want to be healthy. I've taken fitness and nutrition classes, but that doesn't always work. I finally feel like I'm in a place in my life where I have enough stability to start achieving this. I am a compulsive eater. Sometimes I find it difficult for people to understand that. People try to be supportive, but they just don't quite get the complexity of the problem. Sometimes I have great difficulty controlling myself. Sometimes I really HAVE to eat. It's a bit of an addiction. Unfortunately you have to eat, there's no going "cold turkey." I am trying to do this in a healthy way, but sometimes it feels like it's all or nothing. Sometimes I am worried about starting to eat something because I am fearful that I will not stop. I'm seeking others who share these challenges because I realize trying to work through this by myself is going to make the struggle more difficult than it has to be. I will better myself and I will help others better themselves.

    your not alone....
Remember that the next minute/day - is a NEW minute/day. Simply start over. I am back at it too. Only I am fighting this because I simply have to grow up. Food is nurishment - that's it. I like the journaling this way but annoyed that I have to hand write it down. Hang tight you have alot of people here to cheer you on & encourage you.

Hi Charlie -- you certainly came to the right place to find supportive friends who are walking the same path.

You won't necessarily find an exact "diet" on MFP. The program treats you like an adult. And it WORKS. Welcome and let it work for you.
  • We as people must eat, yes. But! On the other hand, certain foods is honestly a crime.
I know exactly how you feel about not being able to stop..It is scary. Very scary.
I was starting to get that way, but i nipped it in the bud before it got much worse.
You need to find your inner strength, and pull it out of you. You must look in yourself
for what you truly want, and go for it. We have one life.
sorry for the preaching, but i know it is hard. I've been their..

    We hear ya Charlie:smile:
The secret is to plan EVERYTHING. That literally means that you have to schedule 4 - 5 meals a day w/a couple of snacks. Serve what you should eat and drink lots of water:drinker: Keep yourself well hydrated, so you never confuse thrist for hunger.
Most importantly, keep it real...keep moving...and try your best to keep it clean.

I have to force myself to EAT a little something for breakfast & do the exact same thing for supper... "eat a LITTLE something"
It's the in-between that'll keep me from over doing it.

I don't have a difficult time with fast foods or cokes....I just never really allowed myself to go down that road, but anything salty and crunchy can make me weak in the knees.

We all have something, so you're in the right place....easy does it:flowerforyou:
    We believe in you!

    Hb154,

You're not coming off as preachy at all. You just get it. It's so encouraging just to find people understanding this type of problem in ways that many other people don't.

  • I definately understand the compulsive eating. I can go a whole day or two eating great and healthy and good portions and then all of a sudden I find myself snacking. A handful of chips here. A few slices of cheese there. And I just start raiding the pantry for a little bit of everything. If we have food at work I just keep finding myself going back for more and more. When I get stressed out or exhausted it gets worse. I feel like I'm crazy sometimes. So you're not alone in that. A coworker of mine just got me to join this site. She I guess had the same issue and she's gradually lost 20 lbs and walks 3 miles 3 times a week. That seems like a crazy amount to me right now but she said the support on this site gradually got her to that point. So hopefully you and I can have the same experience!

    Tinker,

It always starts with just a little snacking...then it just gets out of control. I too have found myself in the pantry for no real reason other than just wanting to eat. It's so great to hear that your coworker has had so much success. It will be wonderful when we are seeing those kinds of results. Good luck in reaching your goals

    Hi Charlie,
I understand what you mean food indeed is an addition. Just like cigarette or alcohol or anything else. Sometime is even worst because since its every were you go and we are literally surrounded by bad food, it’s really hard to escape it. The good thing is that the addition is not the food itself but the ingredients on the food like salt, Sugar, Oil, etc. I has gone thru this before, I use to eat fry food, donuts, lots of salt etc and use to enjoy it, however after I started to eating healthy it became the opposite. I use to go to restaurant and when I smelled the fried oil I was starting to get sick just by smelling the oil. Is hard to explain but is like out mind and body general it own chemical and signals to let us know “don’t eat that is bad for you”. Believe me getting to that point is hard but it’s possible. I know it from first hand. The thing is that when we fall of the track we have to keep going and get back on track, this was my problem and the reason why I’m back on the site. Another hard part is the beginning, after you eat extremely healthy for one month you can start seeing how your body and mind will start to react to the bad food. Take it one meal at the time, one day at the time, and one week at the time. Set goals and challenge yourself. This is what I did u use to challenge myself. For example when everyone was eating KFC, French Fries around me I use to tell myself mentally “I’m strongest than you KFC” “I have control of myself” it was a mental fight. I know I might sound crazy but I love those challenges and that is why it probably worked for me.

Best of luck girl you can do it. Believe in yourself and take control of what you add to your mouth, don’t theses additive food control you. I know easiest said than done, but possible.
