Unexplained weight gain & water retention HELP!!!!!

Hey guys! I've been reading a ton of forums, but I figured I'd post to see if anyone has been experiencing these exact symptoms. I've seen similar combos, but never the same situation. I read a lot of health blogs and books, and I feel like I'm pretty knowledgeable about these topics, but I really need some answers... I'm at a dead end.
PLEASE DON'T JUDGE... posting about health is a sensitive thing, so I would appreciate rational and judgment-free responses. :)
I suffered from an ED all through college (this is my senior year), and I had been taking meds for depression during that time. (Meds that I specifically made sure would not result in weight gain, and they never did... unless for some reason I'm experiencing weight gain two years after taking the same meds) I also experimented with several diet pills and workout enhancers, which I saw great results from in the past... but not anymore. (I know those things are supposed to be taken in short periods of time or not at all)
I am 23 years old and fairly active. I do crossfit and eat a very healthy diet. I never eat fastfood or drink soda(don't remember the last time I did). I am 5'6'', I used to kind of chunky when I started college (like 150) then I lost a ton of weight and got down to 114lbs earlier this year. Now I am around 131... and I have no idea how quickly I gained the weight. It happened so fast. I do not binge on junk food or eat late at night (like I said, I am strict about my diet).
Here are my symptoms:
- weight gain (approx. 15lbs in two months)
- irregular period (absent for around 4 months)
- fatigue, foggy brain
- forgetfulness
- SEVERE CONSTIPATION bloating/stomach distension... this is a HUGE issue. I look like I'm 8 months pregnant when I'm not.
- SEVERE water retention in face... on one side more than the other. (it looks vey odd in pictures. Seems to be my parotid glands)
- recently went off BCP... but I doubt that's a reason to GAIN weight... usually it causes weight loss?

I've tried several cleanses. Candida, Parasite, Green Tea.... I bought a juicer also and thought I'd lose weight with that... but I'm not seeing results! I only gained weight during those cleanses... SO CONFUSED.
I want to reach 120lbs again. That is still within a healthy BMI range, and I want to feel lighter and less weighed down by bloating and constipation.
I know its a bad idea to research symptoms, because you're likely to assume you have just about any or all issues with similar symptoms.. but you never know... I suspect it could be a thyroid problem? (I don't know much about thyroid issues, so if you are reading this and know more about it... I'd love to hear your story of how you discovered you had hypothyroidism and how you dealt with it)
ANY SUGGESTIONS are welcome! PLEASE HELP :)

What type of doc? I'm seeing a new gyno next week. I want to be sure I'm requesting the right exams/tests to be taken. In the past, I've been to docs for constipation but have never gotten answers, or have been given OTC recommendations. The endocrinologists we have in town require a referral prior to scheduling an appointment.

Do you have a regular doctor (i.e. Internist or Family Practitioner)? Share your symptoms with them, and they will help direct you to a specialist, if needed.

I was going to also suggest getting to the doctor asap, but it looks like you are already taken action.

Please do let us know how it goes.

Yes, a doctor immediately would be important. It could be failure of something. Try going to a minor emergency (or even the emergency room) and explain your situation.

love to help but I defer to doctors on this stuff. see one. you might also run all these symptoms through WEB MD and stuff but i'd see a doctor. we're amateurs.
  • I think that everyone is right about you needing to see a doctor when you can- weight gain and irregular periods can be symptoms of a few things such as PCOS, cushings syndrome and hypothyroidism (also sometimes T2DM although the gain seems rather fast an you didn't mention any changes in your thirst levels etc). I hope you get some answers soon :)
  • My sister had a hyperactive thyroid. She got sick and didn't want to eat anything in the summer. We thought it was weird but the doctor said it was just a summer cold. Turns out, it wasn't. After the cold went away, her appetite was really bad and she lost weight rapidly. Since she had always been overweight, she was very excited about this, but the weight loss also allowed her to notice the swelling in her neck. My parents took her to the doctor and they did several tests and determined that she had a hyperactive thyroid and had to destroy it. Now she takes medication and her weight is always swinging back and forth on the scale.

If you haven't already taken a pregnancy test, I recommend it.
The swelling reminds me of intestinal and kidney symptoms, though, if you aren't pregnant.
If you're already seeing a doctor, please ask them to do further tests as this has been on-going without resolve for several months now and it's interfering with your life.

I have no idea, honey - but keep battling till you get some proper answers from a medical professional. Is there an in-house nurse/doctor at uni who you could approach?

    Good luck! xx

First of all, it is very common to gain a significant amount of weight when quitting birth control - just google it and there are lots of people saying this ( it does go away eventually ) and secondly it sounds like you are 100% still totally in an ED mindset, just because you have gained weight that does not mean to say you are better, trust me I have been there,
Please see someone about this, every symptom you have is related to your ED, I guarantee that. Best of luck
  • Thanks to all of you, y'all are all so helpful and encouraging!! The earliest appointment I could get is next Tuesday. We'll see what the doc tells me! :) I'm planning to get blood work done for thyroid just in case, and the urine test will show pregnancy. Hopefully this is not the case, since I'll be graduating college in December. My boyfriend and I live together and have been together for 3 years. At least I know I have the back up plan if needed. I've done preg tests before freaking out that I was pregnant (we've been all there before haha) and never a positive result. Hopefully I will get the answers I need! Thanks again!
