    "gif" is the name for the picture. It's actually an "animated gif" in that it's a number of images grouped together to run in sequence in an animation.


    Edit: That looks like 4 images put through some morphing process. You must need special gear to do that?

    Graphics interchange format. It's the file format of the picture - .gif supports animation, and animated .gif files are popular because they are commonly supported on forums and easy to manage. If you download the picture, you'll see a .gif attached to the end.

    It literally stands for "Graphics Interchange Format". It is a lossless file format for compressing image files into an animation object. It's what MP3s are to music.
