I thought the whole point in exercising was to burn calories, but when you add your exercise, they give you more calories to eat. To me this just defeats the purpose! Can someone explain it to me to make sense?

Because the calorie goal they give you should allow you to lose weight without exercie. I.e., it is already a caloric deficit from your daily calorie burning from everyday life. So when you exercise it may make the deficit too high and can slow your progress. You need to fuel your workouts.0

^^ THIS
MFP sets your goals at a deficit already without exercise involved, so when you exercise you are making more of a deficit and not getting enough nutrition unless you eat back those calories.0
