Swimming?

Hi all,
I've been reading posts for the last few weeks...
All I read about is: threadmill, walking, running, Zumba or similar classes, DVDs and such.
Is there anybody out here who considers swimming as an option?
I always thought swimming was about the best one can do, as you're not likely to hurt your knees/feet or whatever, and it's an overall exercise and I really wonder why I don't see more people mentioning it in their exercise routine.

Yes I am a swimmer! I lost 12 in and 15 lbs over the summer doing it!! But...sadly.....I had to close my pool down since it isnt heated and believe it or not...the water gets down in the 70's and 60's by sept. So now I am doin aerobics. Swimming is an awesome way to excersize. The only thing that stumped me at first was my weight gain from the resistance of swimming. My muscle build up caused me to gain weight lol. But thats ok, I lost fat too!0

I loooooove swimming... not been able to go lately because of money and stuff but its the best work out ever! xx0

I love swimming and it gives me my best calorie usage for the whole week, but I work and swimming takes a long time so I treat myself every Saturday with an hour of laps and some jacuzzi time. Swimming rocks and you go for it!!!!0

I definitely swim. I haven't done it lately as much as I used to - mainly because it's what I do when I fly solo at the gym and hubby has been really on the ball recently.
For me, it's awesome. I have fibromyalgia and a bad knee, so it's pretty ideal. Personally, I like the breaststroke. It's harder to get the form right, and a slower stroke than freestyle, so people will be blowing past you in other lanes. But it also burns more calories. I found that it really helped tone my upper body more as well - arms and shoulders-wise.0 -
Swimming is my favorite! :happy: I do a ton of swimming during the summer when the pools are open, but unfortunately I live in a small town where there isn't any indoor pool so I have to do other exercise during the colder months. Although I've heard recently that our local school has opened the pool to adults one evening a week, so I'll be looking into that.
Swimming is definitely excellent exercise and very easy on the joints0 -
I do water aerobics twice a week and the indoor pool is open year round at my local YMCA so I will continue all winter.:drinker:0

I love swimming. Yes it is the best exercise a person can do because it works out more muscles at a time in the body. Plus is really helps with the tan......0

I used to swim all the time and I've just recently started it up again. I only managed 45 mins and I was exhausted which just proved how unfit I've let myself get! But I'm gonna push through the tiredness because it is definitely the best workout for your whole body, especially if you alternate between the strokes! Hopefully I'll be able to lose as many inches as you!!!0

I love swimming! I used to really be into water aerobics, but I just don't have time for it now (and I'm not sure if my HRM can get wet, and I think that MFP greatly overestimates the calories burned while swimming!).0

I see I'm not the only one who loves swimming. I'll start next week (when the pool is open again after 3 months of maintainance).
I usually swim for about one hour, breaststrokes, but in a way that I can still talk to my SIL who comes with me. It's like walking instead of running, but I have decided to consider it as exercise anyway!!! The more we have to talk, the longer we move in the water ;-)
Does anybody know if swimming can be the right exercise, or maybe enough, to make the skin shrink together with weight and inches? Or do I really need to do strength exercise too?

Swimming alone is ok. I can do that for about 15 minutes before I get bored. But swimming when wearing my waterproof headphones (H2O Audio Interval for my ipod).... that I can do easily for 1 or 2 hours at a time and only stop when I'm exhausted. I love my music and swimming with music is like dancing or something. I really love it. Hopefully it's gonna be my secret weapon in losing weight, that and mfp of course!0
