working out twice a day

Alright I am going to try and ask this without it being too confusing. I recently started Insanity, which is very challenging however I am looking for something more. I work nights (12a-8a) and typically do insanity after waking up in the evenings before work. I am wanting to start doing something not to crazy in the mornings then i will do insanity in the evenings. I am a big fan of running and that pretty much all i did before starting insanity.

I used to run twice a day and loved the benefits, I slept better and then in the evenings my run would help keep my metabolism up through my night shift. However, I am trying to be careful since I recently started insanity and its pretty rough. Any suggestions?

You can still run. Do as much or as little as you like. There is a point of diminishing results, but if you have the energy and the time, go for it.

Just take a day off now and then. And eat!

I also have two-a-day workouts. What about yoga? I practice yoga in the late morning/early afternoon and love the energy boost and muscle stretch.
  • Thanks for the advice. I am wiling to trying anything and find what works best for me

Insanity is so cardio intensive, have you thought of doing some lifting? The only strength training is body weight... which is a lot, but if you are looking for something else.

Also, give yourself a pad for month 2. It gets MUCH harder :)

Were you happy with your results from insanity?
  • Sound like a short jog and weight in the mornings a few days a week and insanity in the evenin is what I will try

1st round - 15 lbs and 5 inches off my waist so YES!

Just starting month 2 of the second round now. My diet hasn't been as good so the losses aren't as dramatic, but still a couple of inches and a few pounds, and month 2 is where you really see the results.

In addition, my fitness is way up and my blood pressure is way down - the nurse at my dr's office had to take the reading twice!
  • Two workouts a day should be done sparingly. Dont forget the workout provides the stress on your body and the rest provides the adaptation. You must have the appropriate amount of stress and rest or breakdown and fatigue will outpace healing and adaptation and you will at best plateau and get frustrared at worse get injured.

As a sports physician I am all for high intensity training however it works best with proper periodization and rest. You may burn lots of calories with frequent 2x day workouts but you will not get all of those calories from fat. Eventually you will start to breakdown muscle which will be counter productive to your overall fitness.

P90x and insanity have a role and are effective for some but for others they are not periodized enough and injuries are not uncommon.

You do realize that working out like this is really not necessary and not generally sustainable. I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that you have an obsession with "burn" and the need to "burn" everything you consume. This can lead to a lot of disordered thinking and negative relationships with food and exercise so be careful. The only people I know who workout the way you are suggesting are basically athletes...and they eat like athletes too.

IMHO, you should develop some independent fitness goals and then perform the requisite training to achieve those goals. Where you're heading sounds like a bunch of over-train and obsession to me.
  • Thanks for the input guys! It's not that I want to overtrain and honestly that's a huge concern for me. I just don't feel comfortable not incorpating weights while doing insanity. I definetely gonna be careful and maybe not do twice a day after getting some feedback..
