EDIT: I don't recall what Lyle recommends these days, but...
calculate TDEE, subtract 20%, and use that as your daily intake
weight train (there's a lot to go into there and I'm too ignorant of everything to give much advice)
eat 1g of protein per lb of lean body mass per day
eat enough fats (esp EFAs)
get enough rest.0 -
Make sure you move The most important things I have learned and believe to be true about losing weight and maintaining muscle are these. One...you have to move and two you have to eat. Do not starve your muscles. Excercise will build/maintain muscle but you need to hydrate properly and you have to eat. Especially within 30 min of a work out. It doesn't have to be something huge. I am vegan so I tend to say a tbsp of nut butter and say 4-5 multigrain or whole grain crackers. Some of my friends prefer a glass of milk or a granola bar. I know one girl who rewards herself with an entire boneless chicken breast and some salad (no dressing) and this is aok. Just make sure you get some protien to help repair the muscle tissue and don't exceed your calories with it. You can do this! You totally can!0

I don't know about the article, but the other points I agree with. ????

Don't set your calorie goal too low or your weight loss expectation too high. If you aim for a half pound to 1 pound loss per week and exercise regularly - especially resistance exercise, you should slowly lose fat without losing significant muscle. You need to make sure you eat enough complete protein to maintain/build muscle, but all the research I've encountered doesn't prove any particular macro ratio better than another, so long as you're meeting the minimums on all categories - you need to find what ratio works best for you (high carb, low carb, high fat, low fat). A nutrition and exercise course I recently completed suggested a minimum of 140 g carb/day, as brain function and a few other body processes are fairly dependent on burning glucose and don't use alternative fuels at all, to not very well. What percent of the total that means depends on your total calorie goal.0
