Anyone else ok with being skinny fat?

I am not asking to be convertited to lifting or being cut. I just really want to know if anyone else out there has no idea what their body fat is and does not care.

I am reasonably fit. Cute clothes fit me. I just don't buy into the notion that I must lift or must have muscle definition everywhere to be healthy. I am 40 years old with two teenagers and a middle schooler, a mortgage, and a minivan I don't want to be comparing "guns" with other moms on the football sidelines.

Anyway, does anyone else feel this way or am I really out here all alone.

People who are "skinny fat" often have visceral fat- fat surrounding their internal organs. Extremely unhealthy. They look OK on the outside but inside is a different story. Just an FYI.

Good God, lady, I wasn't being snide. I'm sorry if the truth hurts. Chill out. I have no idea about your diet or exercise routine. Don't ask a freaking question if you don't want an answer or if you just want people to agree with you. Not gonna happen.

Um, you do realize this is a PUBLIC forum, right? That means anyone can reply to you. If you didn't want other people to reply to you with anything other than a pat on the back and praise and agreement, you shouldn't have posted in a PUBLIC forum.

    Common sense.

Yea, you are right. I asked a specific question in a public forum. I should not expect that people responding will answer the question. My bad. Carry on, I am going to work. Have a great day!

Agree totally! I'm fat fat right now and I'm shooting for skinny fat because I will never be skinny skinny lol! It's what ever skin you are comfortable in honey! Personally I think skinny fat looks better than emaciated like some wanna be!
  • I just want to be healthy and by healthy I mean fit enough to be able to hike, bike, etc. and not be overly winded or exhausted. But I also don't want to be a weakling. I mean I know a few women that can't life something that weighs 25 pounds. Really??? No way to do want to be that woman. I want to be able to pick up a 50 pound bag of dog food at the supermarket and throw it in the cart or onto the belt or into the back of my car without even batting an eye. And at this point I can do all that. And I do look cute in most clothes, but I still want to work on becoming more toned. I don't do heavy lifting. I do kickboxing and it helps build muscle and helps me tone up.

    This is me!

I'm fat. I weigh 262.5 pounds and 36% body fat.

I would be happy with being 200 pounds even if I wasn't strong.

My primary goal is weight loss.

But I have started lifting at the gym because I hope that the increased muscle mass will encourage increased metabolism and fat loss.

But I don't really give a flip about being stronger.

However, I notice at the shooting range when I bend down and squat to pick up spent cases it's much easier to go up and down without effort. And I notice that when shooting I can hold the rifle out in front of me much more easily than before.

And during sexy time I can go a lot longer than before. :)

So there are some benefits to getting stronger.

But mostly I just would be happy not being fat.

I want to be healthy and that is why I won't settle for "skinny fat." When I first heard the term, I looked it up and discovered that it has the same health risks that I had at the time. I want to minimize my health risks and as such, skinny fat (aka normal weight obesity) is not something I think I should settle with.
Like obesity, normal weight obesity may increase your risk of serious health problems, including:

    Heart disease
    Diabetes
Abnormal cholesterol level, in which your triglyceride level is high, but your HDL ("good") cholesterol level is low
    High blood pressure
    Metabolic syndrome

If your fine with that, well that's your choice. It's just not something I'd be willing to settle with.

Before joining MFP, being thin but having visceral (internal) fat was the only description I'd ever heard for "skinny fat" because I work in health care. It's almost always the people who can eat a lot of junk and not gain weight.

But on MFP, when people say skinny fat they usually refer to those that are thin but have a normal BF% in the healthy range, but not in the fitness or athletic range.

I would be fine with the MFP version of skinny fat. I am 52 and do more strength training now than ever before, but it's becasue I'm at the age when muscle and bone loss are common in women. I do it to keep the muscle and bone I have. I have no interest in bulking/cutting or progressive heavy lifting to grow more. I do, however, know my approx. BF%.

Skinny fat is a very abused term. It originally was a slang term for "normal weight obesity" which means having an obese body fat percentage (35%+ for women) while your body weight is in the normal BMI range. This is common in people who are thin in spite of eating junk food and doing no exercises. They generally don't eat that much and may skip meals to avoid gaining weight (this may be deliberate or accidental, e.g. working so hard and not bothering to eat, rather than deliberately skipping meals to stay thin)

Normal weight obesity is not healthy at all, it carries the same risk of metabolic disease that regular obesity carries, plus there's the additional risk from having too little lean body mass, such as low bone density which carries a greater risk of osteoporosis. While each individual should decide for themselves to get healthy, I support people who strive to have and maintain a healthy body composition.

The problem arises when "skinny fat" is used to body shame women who have totally healthy body composition, but whose body fat percentage is in the mid to high end of the healthy range, so they don't have visible muscle definition. If someone's body fat percentage is in the healthy range, then they are not skinny-fat!! They have healthy body composition and no-one has the right to dictate to them how they should look.

I think that would depend on what you mean by skinny fat...if you mean slender but not working to increase strength, or stamina but you can still walk up a football stadium and lift your own milk/eggs and children then cool.... yes I would be fine with that...

if you are talking skinny fat in that you are slender, but can't go for walks, lift your own crap and basically act like a fat person in a skinny body then no....

    does that make sense?

Being blunt I think you are one of the few that are ok with it. A "fat fat" (I hate that term) person will likely say they want to be skinny fat b/c they've been overweight for awhile so any weight loss looks appealing. However, I'm almost certain that once they lose enough weight to become "skinny fat" they will want to keep going to become fit, cut, toned, w/e you want to call it. Most ppl want to look good naked not just in clothes. Skinny fat ppl usually look good in clothes..... At the end of the day fitness is a personal journey. So if your happy being skinny fat then cool. However, you shouldn't look at others who want to be cut, jacked, or freaking huge, in a condescending manner.

If you don't wish to lift, then don't lift. You may, however, wish that you had since lifting preserves bone density and can help ward off osteoporosis in women. It's not all about being ripped and getting bulky and stuff. Sometimes it's just, you know, for your health and stuff. But hey, maybe you're not concerned about that either.

Every time I hear a guy in his 50s complain about his back just because he's had to stand for 2 minutes or whenever I see a 40 year old woman being dropped off in front of the store because she doesn't want to walk from her car through the parking lot because it hurts her feet I'm reminded of why I want to be more than "reasonably fit."

I don't know what my exact BF% is, and I don't care, but I know it's a smidge higher than I want it to be. I know that lifting weights is good for my future bone health. I know it's made this 41 year old have a better body than a lot of women half her age, better than mine was at half my age, and it was pretty damn good back then. I know it's made life easier, that I don't get injured doing household tasks, that I have more energy and more endurance.

I'm not interested in any peeing contests about who can lift heavier or who has bigger muscles or being in any bikini competitions. I just like being strong and fit and happy in my skin.
