Last September I ran a 5k that was 70% down hill with a one mile slow grade in the middle... I was 5 months post op on my 3th major surgery on my left knee... and while my goal was only to finish in under 45 minutes I was admittedly disappointed with my 42 min time and decided running may not be my thing...
This summer was rough on me... while I'm down about 30 lbs from this time last year I hadn't done much running... A friend who is a personal trainer has started taking me through some toned down crossfit and a few weeks back I asked to work in running... little did I know he took that as meaning ok lets run every hill in your neighborhood...
The most I have run in the last 4-5 months was about 1.5 miles at a measley pace of 12:30 min miles... Friday... I was told my work out would be 4 laps in the neighborhood - reversing direction each time... each lap is about .7-.8 miles with some insane hills no matter which way you run it.... (100 ft elevation gain in under a quarter mile)
excluding the 3 min break i took after the first lap to admit i needed my inhaller, I ended up finishing 3 miles in about 36 min... maybe it's not a great time but I ran almost every hill... and on the flats i was averaging a 10 min mile... i may have cried a bit when I got back to my house... I'll never be a marathon runner or finish a 5k in under 30 minutes lol but I was so proud to know that I didn't give up...

That is an awesome improvement!
And don't sell yourself short - a 10 minute mile on the flats is pretty much a 30 min 5k time on a flat course.0 -

36 mins for 3 miles is good in my book! Way to go!0

way to go - just be careful on the downhills with the knees - that is what gives me problems0

i make sure not to go without my brace and my friend gives me tips to help lessen the impact on the hills... loosen up the upper body - make sure the heel strikes first let the gravity carry you etc...0

I am signed up for a 15k in November - its called The Hot Chocolate Run -in Chicago - I am running with two girlfriends who have both ran marathons - their average pace is 930... my average pace is 1000 min mi.... i need to work on my distance and speed before Nov. I did manage 6.6 miles yesterday at a consistent pace...0
