    Id still stick to a calorie goal. I completely get the cals in vs cals out, but Im curious.

    Why would you WANT to restrict certain foods when you don't HAVE to?

    I have never understood this. Why do people want to be miserable?

    Eat what you want at a caloric deficit and profit.

    I eat a slow carb diet, for the most part. By that I mean I eat carbs that have at least a decent amount of fiber and/or protein included. This is what I've always heard the term "slow carb' used to mean - carbs that digest slower because of fiber/protein.

    But I don't think I'd be good at restricting only to the foods listed on that site. I think you could get proper nutrition on it though, so if that's what works for you then I see no problem with it, other than the claim that you can eat all you want and not exercise and still lose weight. The only way you could "eat all you want" is if you wanted to eat little enough to keep a calorie deficit.

    And I don't care how much weight you lose, you are unlikely to remain healthy if you don't exercise. Exercise is the key to good heatlh.

    So my mom is doing the "Slow carb Diet", and she has lost about 20 lbs in about a month. We are both pretty much the same size (5'10 and 240lbs) and it seems to be working for her. Should I try it? Do you guys have any opinions on it? Anyone tried it?

    20 pounds of fat in 30 days ..................this is a dubious claim: "In the last six weeks, I have cut from about 180 lbs. to 165 lbs., while adding about 10 lbs. of muscle, which means I’ve lost about 25 lbs. of fat."

    .....MFP has many people that are very knowledgable re: fitness (My "Fitness" Pal) ..... and the consensus here seems to me .... you can't build muscle while eating at a calorie deficit. You need to eat at a deficit to lose weight.

    For me to keep any weight loss permanent ....I need a lifestyle change. That means if I can see myself eating these same foods a year from now, or 2 years from now ..... then it's a change worth making.

    If you can't see yourself keeping this kind of diet permamently ..... then the weight will just come right back .... or you will have to figure out manitenance (ie: kind of start over).

    I don't think people want to be miserable...they just want a quick fix.

    You're too polite - the claim is complete bull****.

    The idea you can add 10 lbs of muscle in six weeks is beyond ludicrous.

    He presents a few good eating rules, but lots of junk nutrition/dieting information.

    The facts is that you can lose weight eating any kind of diet provided you are using up more calories than you are taking in. Calculate your BMR and your TDEE. If you eat fewer calories than your TDEE, you'll lose weight. The greater the deficit, the faster the weight loss, however eating below your BMR is not recommended.

    I want to redefine the word 'diet' for you. Think of it NOT a food regimen you adopt for a period of time to lose weight. A diet is a food regimen consisting of healthy, nutritious foods that you can imagine yourself enjoying for the rest of your life. (Occasional treats notwithstanding)

    Some foods to highlight, of course, are lean protein, low-fat dairy, VEGETABLES, whole grains, beans & lentils, fruit, nuts, seeds, and more VEGETABLES! Choose smaller portions of less healthy foods less often. Avoid added sugars, fats, snack food, and fast food.

    So, all you need to know is this:
    - choose healthy foods you enjoy and eat them more often
    - eat unhealthy foods less often
    - add in some exercise
    - keep track of your caloric intake
    - and, most of all: make the process ENJOYABLE

    I think for some the belief is by putting foods on restriction will make it easier to accomplish the goal. At least I did for a while early on. Even though I believed it was all about a calorie deficit, I thought it would be easier to do if I restrcited certain foods/groups. I "couldn't" control myself with those foods. And these restrictions work for a time, but then comes the binge. IMHO, i think the only way these kinds of restrictions will work long term is if the person geuinely believes them to be harmful to them either morally or physically (vegetarian, gluten intolerant, GMO's will kill me, etc.).

    I think you have to fully accept that you are 100% responsible for what gets shoveled down your mouth hole and only then .
