Deli meat has sodium??

I went to the deli in Hannaford and had them cut my turkey for lunches all week. Does it really have 500g of sodium in every slice? I'm a little confused. Can someone enlighten me? Thanks for the help!

I assume you mean milligrams, not grams.
But yes, deli meats are generally loaded with sodium.0 -
Deli meat has a TON of sodium. I mean, it's enough to make me go "hot damn, that's a lot of sodium." Even the low-sodium versions are high.0

What's a "slice"? How much does it weigh?
Presuming a slice is 10 grams, 500 mg is colossal.0 -
Are you using a food scale to see how much you are actually putting the amount/slices you think you are? And are you sure it is 500g?
Also, unless you have a medical condition, I don't think it's necessarily something you have to worry about unless that deli meat is really 500 GRAMS for a slice/ounce..lol

Sorry yes I mean 500mg and its about 2 oz slice.0
-
Yes that's why it's always so yummy0

2oz is the serving size and would be several slices.
But yes, it really has that much. Sucks, I know. Especially since I put 4oz on a sandwich.0 -
That's one hell of a slice. 2oz = 56 grams. It'd be around a 1/4 inch thick.0

mmmmmmm turkey slab sandwich!0 -
All processed meat has a substantial amount of sodium in it. That's how it becomes what it is. If you're looking for a choice with less sodium, roast beef is the best option.0

meh, meat with sodium beats meat that kills you (acutely).0

I don't see anything wrong with that...sounds perfect to me.0 -

That would be mg not g.
Some brands have low sodium as an option that is around 340 mg per 2 oz serving, depending on the way it is cut that can be thin multi- slices or one hardy slice. I use Boarshead but there are others out there.
That is why we cook at home more when we are mindful of these micros and macros  .0 -

Deli meat is always loaded with sodium, it's usually cured which is a way of preserving meat through adding a ton of salt. Salt naturally preserves things which is how beef jerky, sausage and even some canned food stays "fresh." If you read the back of a can of v8 it says "no artificial preservatives." They can do that because one can of v8 contains like half of your daily salt recommendation.
Then again, unless you have health concerns related to salt, as in you should be limiting your intake, going over on your salt recommendation isn't a huge deal. Especially if you're young and active.0 -
Yelp! That's why I rarely eat it. I was on two BP Meds (no only on 1). Reducing sodium is a key factor in this journey for me. Before MFP, I thought I was eating health when I at Subways salads and sandwiches. Now because of the sodium I don't eat them.0

If someone who has high blood pressure is seeing benefits from a reduced salt intake, I'd be cautious about making changes just because public health has finally caught on to the fact that not everyone needs to reduce their salt intake.0 -

We basically eliminated deli and lunch meats. Either we cook extra chicken on the weekend or I just do a sandwich for work with lots of veggies and a slice of cheese.0
-
That is why we stopped getting deli meats of any kind. In most places you can have the butcher thin slice a fresh roast or turkey roast for you and tie it then you can cook it at home for way less sodium if you are worried about it.0

Hells yeah it can. But my husband eats it for lunch lots, bikes 20 miles a day and no problems. The other preservatives in it aren't good either, but if you need to "train " for better eating with a deli turkey sandwich, better than McDonald's cheese burger which I am quite guilty of LOL The only way* I* can do this and lose is trying to cook lots of regular food for dinner, and then using that for lunches the next day. I eat Top chef frozen dinners too and you can see how much sodium they have! Just as long as you're aware of it, then carry on! Try cooking a turkey breast yourself and then taking that for lunches and you will REALLY love it. Good luck to you and enjoy your "sammich" LOL0

Well, if reduced salt is the only change they've made, then sure, but how likely is it that someone on a diet website has not cut other foods too?
And how can anyone make an informed decision if they're not actually informed.
Too little salt can cause hypertension, too.0
