Good morning internet! My name is Kevin and I live in Overland Park, KS. I was an all-state swimmer in HS with many records and was extremely fit. I went to college, got an engineering degree (no sleep, no excercise really at all) and just got married. I find myself watching 4-6 hours of TV nightly and I find that I am staying at the same weight, around 255 at 6'-1". After an argument with my wife last night I realized it was time for a life change. So in the past week I have completely organized my home, I have a ton of stuff I am selling off, and I am going to start working out 3 weekdays and 1 weekend day for 1 hour. My goal weight is 189, which puts me at the max weight to qualify for the BMI discount through my insurance for 2015 (weigh-in is Oct 2014). At 1.5 lbs per week, I should be there with time to spare. My wife is in full support, and she is going to try to lose the rest of her baby weight (just had my second on the 20th of August).

The trick is going to be doing this for free. My wife and I got our budget updated for one income last night and it has $40 in spending money at the end of each month, which means FREE. I have obtained P90x already and intend on running (already have some shoes, but never really was a runner) a good amount. During the winter I have a treadmill and P90x! I am very active on car forums and I have decided to nix car forums for the fitness forums, and drive myself to better health one day at a time! MFP seems like a great platform to track it.

So here's to Kevin's first REAL start at fitness, September 9th, 2013. Hopefully this time next year none of my current clothes will fit and I will be ready to weigh in for a $40/month discount on insurance!

*Edit* I opened up my diary, so hopefully some motivation there!

Congrats on the new baby and the new life style choices I hope you find great success. MFP is a good starter point it is really fun to track you calories here and I have to say everyone I have interacted with has been super supportive. Good luck! Welcome!

Welcome to MFP & congrats on the baby and making a life style change. Tracking your food intact on MFP is free and can really make a difference for you & your wife. At home you can do squats, lunges, push ups, crunches, dips (off a chair/table), planks (all kinds of variations to planks), run up & down the stairs, etc. You don't need an expensive gym membership to get in some exercise. Doing it with your wife should be helpful as you guys can motivate each other. Best of luck! You can request me as a friend if you want.

Good afternoon - and congrats on trying to get back in shape! My husband and I are attacking our weight and food issues together too, starting yesterday. It's a big job! P90X is NO JOKE...have you tried it yet? I gave myself a concussion this past January by not being careful (but aside from that, because I'm a klutz, it REALLY WORKS). Running is an amazing idea too - are you using the Couch to 5K program, or just running? Good luck! :)

Never heard of this "Couch to 5k" program. Sounds interesting. I shall summon the Google Gods and figure it out. Thanks for all the notes, day 1 and I feel the power of the internet coming full force!!!

Wow, you've never heard of it? It's great! I've done it twice now (lol), and am almost done week 2 this time. It takes you from a total running noob and couch potato (I was one of these the first time I did it) to being able to run a 5K in 8-9 weeks. I use Robert Ullrey's podcasts sometimes because the guy is so annoyingly positive...it makes me run just to shut him up, but the things he says are so encouraging! There are also a TON of Android phone/Blackberry/iPhone apps that enable you to use your own music in the background. They time each interval so you don't have to worry about anything except running!

Never ever. I have researched and now I am informed. Was wondering what all these people on facebook were posting when they said "Just finished week 3 of C25K".

    The more you know...

Yep, that's exactly what they're doing. Those posts are likely from one of the phone apps, too. I'm guilty of flooding Facebook with those as well...:ohwell:

So what happens when I get lunch provided by a vendor, try to eat light, and go over my daily intake BEFORE DINNER???

Seriously I get it, but MAN that lunch is killing me!

Thats when you begin now planning a workout for this evening when you get home! The more you exercise, the more you get to eat!

Congratz on your new start! My husband and I are also doing this together. Feel free to add me if you like.

    Hi Kevin,

I just wanted to throw out that this website has TONS of free workouts you can do at home- http://www.fitnessblender.com/

I did P90X a few years ago, I really enjoyed it but it was a little too long for me. I like the fitness blender because I do a lot of their HIIT workouts that are 30 minutes or less. Also, definitely recommend couch to 5k if you want to start running. It's a great program for beginners.

Best of luck on your weight loss journey!

...would it be cheaper/easier on the daily intake to cancel the vendor and just pack your own stuff for lunch?

Congrats on taking the first step! Keep this attitude and you will find yourself pleasantly surprised! One of the first things you should do is make sure you know your TDEE http://scoobysworkshop.com/calorie-calculator/
MFP is pretty good but the calorie calculations are low. Knowing your TDEE will give you a healthy range (just don't eat back exercise calories if you are going by this number). You will get a lot of advice here, take most with a grain of salt. The most important thing to know is calories in needs to be less than calories out! Good Luck and have fun!

Can you eat 1/2 the lunch and take the other half home for dinner?? You have to figure out a way. If it's important you'll find a way...if not you'll find an excuse.

Congrats on the baby, and good for you and your wife for getting healthy together!! That's what it's all about!! :)

Hello, Kevin! Congrats on the new baby and on the better life style choices. I think you've come to the right place for encouragement and advice.

In addition to running and P90X, can I suggest pushing the kiddos around the neighborhood in the stroller for 30 min/evening after work on the days you aren't working out? If your wife wants to come invite her, of course. However, offer her the 30 minutes off first. As a mom of four, I know how valuable 30 minutes alone can be to her sanity and if she stays sane, you'll be better off. My husband used to stay with the kids while I walked the half hour, but he made sure (and still makes sure) I got that one break most days.

I am losing for the same reason you are and need to be 155 by May, 2014. I'm making good progress so far and it's at least partly due to my husband giving me that 30 minute break to walk or jog. (It's easier now, our youngest is 7.)
  • Many congratulations are in order: a new baby, the decision to make a change and a supportive spouse to join you! Feel free to add me, as I keep an open diary as well for accountability ;) I have found, for my third go around, that MFP really is the key to my success and this time around I am looking to build a network of support through site as well.

I hear the budget.... not only do I have to exercise, but eat on a budget as well. Its totally doable! I'd definitely suggest taking it slow with the P90X, that is no joke! I went from sedentary life style to jumping on the bandwagon and got quickly discouraged. I know Hulu has some workout programs or channels too, if you ever want a little variety.

I agree - change the lunch from the vendor to a packed lunch you make at home - your wallet and your waistline will thank you for it!
If you and your wife enjoy television in the evenings, perhaps you could incorporate some sort of exercise into that - don't know if you have 'freecycle' where you live, its where people give items they don't want/use away in a type of online 'community' - might be worth taking a look to see if anyone is giving away an exercise bike/rowing machine or selling one for a nominal amount? If you had one of those, you could keep up to date with your fav tv programmes, burn calories AND therefore increase your allowance!

I'm in the same boat as you trying to lose about 60 pounds in the next 13-14 months. From a fellow OP'er congrats on the decision to make a lifestyle change. Also OP is a great place for walking, biking, and running as there's many trails like Indian Creek Trail. There's also lots of sidewalks throughout the vast majority of neighborhoods in OP. I know it's not the best weather today in OP for outdoor exercise so maybe use that P90X until the weather gets a bit cooler and more fall like.

Thanks for all the support and resources.

I have done the P90X full session before, but I cheated my way through and probably did about 80% of the program. I had a 6 month period of fitness addiction, but it also came with calorie addiction so I really trimmed myself but never lost any weight.

The vendor situation was kind of a joke, as it happens once or twice a month and its a pre-proportioned meal and what I dont eat I lose. I actually excercised the calories off and came in under last night! Feeling great this morning!

I will look into all of these resources! I ran my first C25K run last night, results here (note that the WU was on the treadmill so the data is all wack):

I am actually pretty proud of myself for running in 89F heat and making it that far and on an 8:XX pace for running and 12:XX for walking briskly! I signed up for a local 5k in 10 weeks so hopefully the program works!

Hello Kevin...I am doing P90X and SeanT on my quest to help me loose weight so I am making it my mission to help others with their daily goals but also, help me fine tune my workouts and eating. My blog/diary will be open to help me continue this accountability as well. Let me get adjusted to this new site. I have exercised pretty consistently but, need to fine tune the eating.

To all out there, find the exercise program or routine that doesn't make this journey feel like drudgery!

    Good Luck Kevin....

Hey Kevin - my cable company (Comcast) has a "sports & fitness" network, where they have a slew of free exercise videos. You should check yours for that. Walking (pushing a stroller as someone suggested) is awesome. So is going for a bike ride. Congrats on the new baby and the positive changes you are making. Good luck!

He only made it through about .9 miles. I am working on his fitness as well :). He is a great dog with a TON of energy and has been cooped up with the new arrival.
  • I have the zombie app! Love it!! I am on week one, tried to bring my dog last night but he wanted to run the whole thing. Congrats on babies, wedding and weight loss!
