Gaining Inches

Hi. I am new here. I have been working out since May. I started doing a mini stepper and noticed that I was toning up and fitting better in my clothes. All my life I have always been petite, but I have noticed within the last three years that I have gained a few pounds, and have pocket fats, such as love handles, bigger saddle bags, excess fat under chin, and bigger breasts, my arms also have gotten a little bigger, stomach not bad unless I am really bloated. When I did the mini stepper I dropped a couple pounds, got more toned, my saddle bags shrunk lots, and my face got a little tighter, breasts stayed the same. Then I plateaued.

I stopped losing and toning up. I took up weight lifting. I can feel myself getting stronger, but I can't see my muscle unless I flex, my arms are flabby on the back. Now I can't fit into my jeans, most of my pants anyways. I have gained inches. Pounds went up a few.

I drink lots of water, and I am drinking protein shakes and eating organic fruits and veggies. I stopped sating rice and bread, but I will have oatmeal. I do not drink soda pop at all. I eat every two or three hours and small portions. I go for long walks with my dog, use elleptical, treadmill, stepper once in awhile and trying to lift heavy. I am also going to do HIIT cardio.

Can somebody please tell me why I am gaining inches. The pounds are the same. It has been four weeks since I changed my routine. I weight lift 4 times a week, and do cardio 6 times a week.

I am confused why is this happening. I would like to lose two sizes.

I will have sald no noodles or rice. I will have the odd toast whole wheat once in awhile. I also will have cheerios oat bran for breakfast or snack as well.

Unless you're measuring what you're eating, it's very hard to know how much you're really eating. If you're gaining inches, it's likely that you're eating more calories than you're burning. Have you tried logging your meals? It's very easy to eat more calories than you need to lose weight, even if the foods are healthy.

Your BMI is 18, you are technically underweight. I can't really imagine you have any fat left to lose.

Please head over to the fitness forum and read about how to gain lean muscle mass. This is done by eating over your maintenance in calories with adequate protein and lifting heavy weights. You can also do exercises that use your own body weight such a yoga and Pilates.

When I did the stepper I lost weight and toned up. On top of that I ate sweets and drank iced coffees with cream.
I just changed my diet the past month still I am gaining inches. Could somebody also tell me why i am weight lifting,
I started out with 10 lbs, now I am on 15 lbs aiming for 20, I still cannot see muscle without flexing.
I am taking in protein eating lots, and very healthy, I add healthy fats like olive oil. I do not eat greasy or fried foods.
I would say that I am eating about 1800-2000 cal per day. Would like to see muscle

Start measuring and logging your food and then check back in a week when you have an accurate picture of what you're eating.

Also, verify that you're not expecting your period soon.

Muscle, especially in females, can take a long time to build and will be less defined than in men. Unless you have a very low BF%, it's unlikely you'll see defined muscles while they are relaxed, or at least this is my understanding.

I am expecting my period in a couple weeks or a little less.
So how would I get low body fat, would I have to do more cardio?

Why would a 105 lb person need to lose more weight? Go eat a gallon of ice cream.

It sounds like she's rally more interested in body recomposition than weight loss, from what I understand. She wants to build muscle and have visible definition.

Eat more and lift weights. No more cardio.

Why would I eat ice cream. That stuff is full of crap and causes heart diseases. I don't care if I don't lose pounds. I want to be able to fit in my clothes and get rid of my pocket fat. I do notice that my love handles are slowly shrinking. I used to have muffin tops but those are gone. Who doesn't want to get rid of pocket fats? I don't want to look skinny fat. Lol.

I already tried to eat more and lift weights, and I cut cardio for about a week, and Lord did I get a little flabby and puffy. I think that only works for men.
  • Drop the cardio and start a low-volume resistance plan....that way you can tone up without bulking. Just remember that you'll need to modify your intake a bit to properly fuel your workout.

AND DON'T GIVE UP ON IT. It takes a little time.

You get "puffy" because your muscles are retaining water. Girls also do not bulk. But you seem to not really care what anyone has to say about it anyways.

What kind of weight lifting are you doing? If you want to get rid of excess fat and change your body composition, you should look into a heavy routine with compound lifts that work multiple major muscles together. You can do all the bicep curls in the world with a 10lb weight and never see major results in your overall body. However, a lot of your body is just genetics, meaning you can only change so much about it. So don't expect to look like Jessica Alba just because you take up lifting (unless you already look like Jessica Alba, of course).

ETA: and definitely start logging your food.

Who said that I don't care? Why do you have an attitude? This is supposed to be a supportive forum. I am not looking to be ridiculed. Funny I had a personal trainer and I seen before and after pics of his clients. One girl came in second place in a fitness show and her body was all muscle and she was a few lbs heavier than me. He said took her a month to get like that and she ate 7 times a day. He was making me do cardio, he made all his clients do cardio. Can't cut it out completely. This guys have pics of proof. Maybe I will just go for walks and lift heavier.

The only attitude is what you are perceiving. I gave a suggestion and you shot it down with a ridiculous excuse. I think the attitude is your own.

You mentioned you started your intervention in May and made some progress. What was your starting weight and how many calories were you eating back then? I'm guessing you ate less than the 1800 to 2000 that you are now, correct?

I was about 98 lbs back in may, but I had more pockets of fat on my bady. I was not as toned. I was not lifting back then.
