Making the choice NOW -slimfast

I not sure if this is the right place to place this topic but here I go.

I just wanted to start of by saying I have been battleing my weight for as far back as I can remember. I always dreamed of being skinny and having all eyes on me. But over the years I have changed that view and now want to be more healthy, making healthier choices, being able to run up a flight of stairs and not feel like I'm gonna pass out. The biggest thing is I want to feel confident again.

So I have decided to give slim fast a real try and see if it works. Now it says to use milk but I'm going to use almond milk. I also am in classes a lot and working so its perfect for my busy life. As for snacks I'll fill up on healthy choices like fruits and veggies and a small amount of dairy. Dinner will consist mostly of a big salad with either chicken, shrimp or fish. Its healthy and quick.

My current weight is 202 pounds
Goal weight is 125 pounds
I am 5 foot 1 I am a bit bigger boned so that's why I picked that weight.

As for working out I do talk home from work which is 20 min away.

If you want to follow me feel free. I also have a instagram account to with daily pictures. The account is xxxfit4life

Anyone with some advice feel free to post

I would recommend eating real food, but ultimately it is your choice.

Make sure you are getting adequate fiber in your diet to keep your BMs regular.
Might want to add more protein in with your dinner (not sure of SFs protei. content).
    Best of luck.

A calorie deficit is all that is needed for weight loss and exercise for fitness. The slim fast is a meal replacement that is not really going to teach you anything about portions and long term success. (are you going to do slim fast forever? are you going to take slim fast to all family/friend functions? etc.) Set realistic goals, have patience and be consistent with logging everything. There are many options so you can eat real food versus slim fast.

There are WAY better ways ones that are lasting and not going to come right back if you stop drinking the shakes plus those things taste aweful!!

My advice, because you asked for it. Lose the Slimfast. Eat a balanced diet with all the foodz. Determine your TDEE and eat at a moderated (20%) deficit and continue with the daily walks.

I've done the slim fast plan. Several times. Because it doesn't work long term :/

I hope you succeed. But I would encourage you to find a way to do it in a way you can sustain forever. Eat at a reasonable calorie deficit, exercise if you can. Keep it simple

I really wish the best for you and I hope I am wrong but slimfast is really not going to teach you the things you need to be successful.

Go here and look at the recipes and amazing home cooked food you can make. Look at the serving sizes than look at your daily goals. There is a better life out there than meal replacement stuff.

There are lots of Slim Fast discussions on MFP. If you search for Slim Fast you can pull some up. Most MFP people are against using it -- lots of sugar, overpriced for the value, and if you follow the Slim Fast plan you don't learn how to eat real food and might gain your weight back when you quit using the plan.

I've used Slim Fast twice this year for short periods of time with no problem. It IS a crappy shake among shakes -- only 2 g of protein (about 10 g with the milk or almond/soy milk), sugar is the main ingredient, plus it has aspartame (figure that one out).

However, I live in a tiny town and that's what the drug store and grocery store carry. I used it in the beginning of my weight loss efforts for about 2 weeks while I tried to figure out what to eat for breakfast. I did not gain anything back when I switched to steel cut oats. A few weeks ago I used Slim Fast again for a sugar/chocolate fix combined with a meal because I was starting to eat junk food at work. It worked really well and I'm tapering off it with no problem. I have never gained weight after I stopped using it.

You can order a much better shake nutrition wise from Amazon.com -- less sugar and more protein. Slim Fast seems okay short term or when you are traveling, as long as you have no delusions that you're basically drinking a PopTart.

Slimfast isn't going to teach you about making better choices, nor is it going to make you better at running stairs.

You don't need a "kick start".

There are no special foods to eat.

Eat the number of calories MFP tells you to eat and you will lose weight. It's that simple. Maintain a caloric deficit and lose weight. It's guaranteed, promise.

I tried slim fast a couple years ago (2009) and it worked for me; I lost about 30 pounds in nine months. I didn't follow the complete plan though. I only drank one shake a day (for breakfast) and only had one of their meal bar three days a week. I only did that because I was in class from 10 to 3 and had NO time to actually get lunch! On the days I wasn't in class during lunch, I would actually eat real food. I sometimes had their snack bars as well, but not very often. Along with the shakes, I also watched what I ate and started exercising. I worked out about three days a week for 45 minutes; 15 minutes on a treadmill (walking at least 3 mph at an 10 incline) and 30 minutes on an elliptical machine. I drank one of the pre-made shakes because I did try the powder and I didn't like the taste, so I don;t know how switching mile with almond milk would work.

I still drink one shake everyday for breakfast since it's easier. I don't have a lot of time to cook in the mornings.

I would say that your plan could work as long as you don't rely too heavily on the shakes for your nutrition. You should still make sure that you 're eating real food and getting most of your nutrition from that.

You can eat literally anything you want to. I'm eating Lindt chocolate as I'm typing this.

Just eat within your calories and you will lose.

WHY, WHY, WHY do people feel the need to "jump start" their weight loss?????
    {pardon me}

    1)
Studies show that the slower you lose the longer you keep it off. It doesn't matter how much you lose if you don't keep it off.
    Pardon my generalizations, but...
When you yo-yo diet you usually lose weight, then gain back PLUS more. Then you lose more weight and gain that back PLUS even more. Then the desperation sets in any you feel the need for even more drastic measures and the cycle ramps up.

    2)
the whole "jump start" strategy means...
you have to to learn how to eat "on a diet" (depriving yourself?)
Then you have to re-learn a whole new way of eating to maintain.

It's much easier if you learn healthy eating habits from the get go.

    A bit long-winded... sorry.

The good news is you don't have to be perfect, you just have to be better.

++Track for a week or two before worrying about losing. This way you'll see where you really stand odds are it is different than where you thought you were, which is actually good news...

++Be scrupulously honest... you can lie to your friends, you can lie in your diary, you can lie to yourself, but YOUR BODY KNOWS EVERYTHING YOU EAT. So you might as well be honest in your diary (keep it private if you like) but you need that info because you can't get where you are going if your are not honest about where you are right now.

++See where you can make small changes on things that aren't so important to you.
(Don't even think of taking chocolate out of my diet!!!)
    --Reducing quantities
--Swapping out things instead of eliminating them.

++Focus on what you should eat not what your shouldn't.
Eating your nutritious foods first. Your body will be more satisfied and have less cravings.

    ++Small sustainable changes.
Every couple of weeks see where you can make another couple of small changes.
If you completely revamp your diet, it's way easy to revert to old ways in times of stress. (and who doesn't have stress?)
If you make a series of small changes, food still offers you some sense of comfort, sort of a comfort continuum, and after a while the first small changes will seem comforting in themselves. Also rather than having to think about everything all the time. You only have to think about a 2 or 3 new things to focus on.

++Rather than being uberstrict with the target MFP set for me. (I swear this saved my life.) I was happier once I gave myself a range:

    ROCK BOTTOM: 1200 cal
TARGET: MFP Calories for lose 1 lb a week (when that hit 1200 I changed to lose 1/2 lb per week)
TOP OF RANGE: Maintain Calories for my GOAL Weight.
(SAFETY VALVE: Maintain Calories for CURRENT Weight - remember to keep updating this number as you lose)

++Only worry about it 1 lb at a time.
Forget I *NEED* to lose 20, 30, 50, 100 lbs. I'm only worried about 1 lb the next one. I'll worry about the others later.
Once I found ways to lessen the stress, I found it way easier to focus on the process and let the results follow. (It's what worked for me some people need the stress to get them motivated. Me I get scared and overwhelmed and don't see the big goal as achievable. )

Food is not the enemy. You need nutrition to fuel your body and make it strong.

Most vitamins are fat soluable... so remember to include plant and fish based fats (HAPPY FATS) so you can access the nutrients in your food.

All of your foods fall into 1 or more of 3 macro nutrient categories
FATS • CARBS • PROTIENS ... I personally think it's unwise to severely restrict any one of these categories.
Instead of eliminating or limiting quantity focus on the quality...

HAPPY FATS (Plant and fish bases)
COMPLEX CARBS (un or minimally processed)
    LEAN PROTEINS

Oddly enough, on my journey here I've reduced guilt over food.
I have the occasional treat and I fully enjoy it with no guilt involved.
The thing is since I'm not eating crap all the time, now the occasional treat is just that a TREAT it's special and I enjoy it so much more than when I was unconsciously shovel junk food into my face.

Used slim fast in my yo-yo years.. never kept me full for long enough and always ended up eating a real meal in addition to the shake.

    Gain weight afterwards.

I find when I'm in active weight loss that portion control and avoid sugary/calorie drinks (besides alcohol) works for me. Purchase a food scale, measuring cups, measuring spoons, and get comfortable with the serving sizes on the back of labels.

I really would suggest perhaps not slimfast - I have used the bars in a crunch for a cal boost or meal replacement - then I discovered cliff bars - so much better. Making your own lunches is easy - you just need a cooler bag and a little lunch ice pack if you don't have acess to a fridge.
