newbie, one week in, am I doing it right?

I've been using MFP for a week, would anyone mind giving mine the once over and see if I'm on the right track please?

I'm a 42 year old female, 189lbs, 5ft tall, bmi of 37 .. as of yesterday!

I've just come out of a 6 month depression where I pretty much ate carbs for the whole time. I've cleaned up my food intake dramatically, lots of fresh fruit and salad and I carry a bottle of water with me everywhere but I don't bother to log that. I'm strictly vegan too.

exercise is still an issue, I've walked the dog a couple of times which is a big thing for me to leave the house unless I'm taking my daughter to her gym classes where I help get out the trampolining equipment and put it away.

my goal is to feel comfortable in my own body, my doctor obviously wants my bmi to be hovering around the 25 mark. I've just signed up to train to be a trampoline coach, I want to be able to get up on th bed and have people look at my bright pink hair and not look at me because I'm fat!

Are you losing weight at a rate you are happy with? If so then I think you're doing it right. It looks like you're doing well with your logging (other than that water bottle!)
  • hey thanks for the reply! I have no idea, I had no way of weighing myself before I started last Thursday, and I got my gp to weigh me yesterday. .. he wants me to go and be weighed again in 6 weeks, knowing that will keep me going.

you will see I had a carb craving last night, so incorporated it into my calories! I feel really good, I'm careful to make sure I have some protein wherever possible, and am careful with my portion size. that said, I eat first and then log.. I'm not going to get totally obsessed or upset if I go over my calories. I'm far from starving! I thought I'd feel hungry but I don't. . which shows me that I've been eating when I have in fact been dehydrated!

well, first things first - go get a scale :)

It's really difficult to know if your diet plan is helping you meet your goals, if you don't know how it is affecting you.
  • I will get some today! !
  • The only thing that jumps out at me is the fact that you are over on your sugars everyday. I know this is due to the fruit intake. I would watch to see if I get fluxes in energy levels. If you do then balance out the sugars.

I also agree with Joshdann. Track the water and get a scale. I weigh twice a week, Monday and Thursday. Get up, pee, scale. More than that and it can become muddled. The scale, how your cloths fit, and your energy levels are the best indicators that you are on the right track
  • good point! I'm much more energetic, and alert which is really nice.

I'm very much a savoury girl, would rather eat crisps than (dark) chocolate so the high sugar is new for me, I'm trying balance things as best I can! and I'm trying to avoid processed carbs wherever possible. if I have lots of calories left at the end of the day then I have a bowl of cereal which makes sure I'm getting iron and b vitamins - both important as I'm vegan (diet only and yes, I'm aware honey isn't vegan)

think my main problem is lack of exercise! I'll get myself a pair of trainers when I can afford to, and go out for some walks!
  • I'm drinking about 2 litres of water a day, and exercising by running up and down the stairs to the loo all the time! lol
