I live in a hilly area and I can’t run a full 3 miles without walking.
1st mile pace is 10:30
2nd is 11:30
3rd is 11:45
and then I walk more on my 4th mile to end around 4.5 miles. How long does it take to turn a non-runner into a nonstop 5 mile runner?
I do like when a nurse listens to my heaart they ask are you a runner or an athlete?0 -

I started running 3x a week in late July of this year, also in a hilly area and your times look like mine. I was only able to make 4 miles without interval walks just this last week and it was a peak effort - still at those same mile pacing.
Keep it up!
This is an awesome thread, so much encouragement and many folks with a great sense of humor. I love this forum!

What is it that is causing you to stop? Fatigue? Breathlessness? Cramps?0 -
I created a playlist for my two year old to keep her occupied while in the jogging stroller. No more stopping every 10 min!!0

..... I feel sad when I cannot get in a run.
..... I wear what I am comfortable in when I am running and don't give a rip how it looks.
..... I got running clothes and a FitBit for Mother's Day and I was THRILLED
..... I carry my running bag in and out of work everyday on the off chance that my 30 minute lunch might get extended and allow me time to really get in a run --- you know, power outage, fire in the building, some other disaster that would allow for longer than 30 minutes....
..... I feel good when I am running and better when I am finished!0 -
I got up at 2:00 am to do a long run so I could leave for vacation by 8.
I'm training a group of kids to run...whoda thunk it?0 -

Usually fatigure and hills, my breathing does get harder when I run some of the hills. I usually can run farther uphill when another runner is coming towards me. lol0 -
You spent an hour making a playlist for a run that will take 30 min. :explode:
Been there, done that! I have also dealt with the ugly toenail thing on my big toes. They grew out, but future ones are inevitable AND like many others who have posted, I would rather shop for athletic/running apparel and shoes than regular clothes. The best years of my life have been the ones when I have been running regularly. I got away from it, but I getting back into it. Oh, and I'm making a quilt out of the fronts of the various T-shirts I've gotten at races (I can only wear so many)!
I must say this is one of the BEST forums I have ever seen here on MFP. So much fun and comraderie!! Rock on (Run On), everybody!!0 -
My Shoes are constantly in my car
I have a sports bra/tank top tan line
I get bummed to go on vacation because there's no one to watch the kids while I run
I ask my mom to come watch my kid during a nap while I run
I run a 5k before a wedding because it's the only time I can fit it in
I see the temps fall to 72 degrees and think that's a perfect day to go running
I show up at my bf's work early for an open house and take of on a quick run because I have some extra time
I look at the stupid oval stickers on the back of a car and think one of those will be mine
I walk to my trunk and my youngest automatically assumes we're getting the stroller out for a jog
People at work tell me they have never seen someone so dedicated and I'm an inspiration
When I don't run on lunch people ask me what's wrong0 -
I have a matching set of toenails. Five missing, five still there.0

im almost proud when my toenails fall off0

When you tell your spouse that you have to work early or late, when you're actually getting in a run to stay on track with your training schedule0

I have dedicated an entire portion of my closet to running/workout clothes.
I have half a shelf in my pantry for energy gels/bars/etc.
I get more excited about spending close to $100 on running shoes than high heels.
I know the exact distances to nearly all major intersections in my neighborhood.
I get up at the crack of dawn or go out in the heat of the late afternoon just to get a run in.
I plan weekend plans around my long run.
I started using racing bibs in my home décor.
And lastly, because I just get out there and run.0 -
" How long does it take to turn a non-runner into a nonstop 5 mile runner? "

I'm in the same boat. I'm slow, but I log those miles and I'm certainly not walking them. Also, I'm short, running fast is a bit harder when you have to put in that many more strides per minute to reach the same pace of a normal or tall person. (My 6' tall husband and I (5'1) don't run together for just that reason!)0 -

Guilty!!0 -
because nobody wants to hear me talk about running anymore
Pretty much this...I have no close friends who like to run...it's so sad! And I feel like everyone gets annoyed when I talk about running.
A lot of the other ones too -
I have an extra set of running clothes in my car at all times
Plan my weekends around my long runs
I get up earlier on the weekends than I do during the week to run before it gets hot out
I know how many miles everywhere in my town is from my house
The most expensive shoes I own are running shoes
A run can completely change my attitude/mood from terrible to great
And most importantly because I still get out there, almost every day, and just do it!0 -
I only recently felt like a runner when various neighbours say me walking the dogs on my rest days and asked why I was not running.
When I get stiff from sitting at my desk and while walking by coworkers they comment that I must have done one of my good runs before work because of how I am walking.
Look at new workout gear before I even consider new work clothes and get excited about sales at SportCheck.
I no longer get in trouble for wasting money on new runners from my hubby since I have proven that I have been sticking to this whole running thing.
So many more that people have listed here already0 -
You take a day off work to do an 8 mile training run in order to make it to opening night of the NHL season. :laugh:0
-
cause i am running a half mary on Sunday on a stress fracture... Runner or stupid? BOTH0
-
When I lost my big toe, I felt like a runner. I have bigger shoes now so hopefully I can avoid that problem.
Also, today I am praying for rain to break this heat wave so I can get a solid 5 miles in. Yesterday I didn't check the weather and felt like a failure because I struggled in 90% humidity and near triple digit temps.
When I'm driving and make a mental note of parks or trails for future runs0
