Water Retention- help!

Hi there,
How long does it generally take for sodium retention to decrease. I have had a high sodium and carbohydrate diet (due to the rapid 3 lbs gain on the scale). How long does it take for that to decrease?

Thanks

I don't know how long to lose the additional water weight. However, there are things that you can do to help. Eating foods like cantaloupe and strawberries are natural diuretics. You can customize your settings to monitor your sodium intake. Too little sodium is as bad as too much sodium. If you eat a balanced diet it is hard to get too little sodium as many foods naturally contain sodium. I am over 50 and try to keep my sodium to a maximum of 3000 mg or 3 grams per day. My sodium goal is 1-2 grams per day (a cardiac diet). You can check with your doctor about what is reasonable for you. If you google foods that help with water weight there will probably be other examples.

Coffee, and drink plenty of water. Water helps flush the sodium and will flush out the water along with it. I would go for 10-12 glasses of water throughout the day until it normalizes. Might take a week or so. I also work out because sweat will flush out some of the salt.

Drink lots of water. For me, I usually see it go down within a week.
  • Thanks for the comments! I drank around 15 cups of water today or 120 ounces of water! WHOOP WHOOP! Hopefully this sodium will go away!
