Calories burned while crawling?

My wife and regularly go fishing and I spend a lot of time after dark hunting worms to use on our hooks. This usually consists of crawling slowly for one to four hours on my hands and knees while occasionally stopping on all fours to scan a piece of ground. I also end up shifting my weight to one knee and one leg in order to stretch out to get worms just outside of arm's reach (kind of like a Pilate or Yoga move). I'm a male and I weigh around 240 pounds at 6'0", and I know I feel like I got a workout afterwards. Any idea of the calorie burn rate on this?

Thanks!

Unless you are crawling around at like 3 MPH for an extended period, I doubt it is worth worrying about.

Four hours to get worms? I don't know where you live that getting worms takes so much effort, but they are pretty cheap to buy.

Crawling slowly is not going to burn many calories. More than sitting on the couch, but still not many.

    Don't worry, you didn't. ;)
  • Thank you for the advice. To those who don't feel like offering any real solutions: you are why people like me who want to lose weight and get healthy lack motivation. Your comments are not only unwelcome, but I'm sure also violate the terms of service of this blog.

On why it takes so long to get worms, we get 700-800 in a night. We use about a hundred a week and sell the rest for $2 a dozen... Not a bad use of time.

    Thanks again :)
  • In addition, a cat-cow pose in yoga (which is nearly exactly what I'm doing for hours), can burn around 150 calories an hour for a 175 pound person according to LiveStrong. So I AM burning more calories that just sitting around. I guess I'll just go conservative and stick with about a hundred an hour. Not great, but we all deserve credit where it's due. It certainly has improved the muscle tone in my arms- gained two inches in my traps in two months...

If you really want to know a more accurate amount of calories burned while doing this, wear a heart rate monitor.

Also, I respectfully disagree that "meanies" are the reason people lack motivation. No one is responsible for your motivation, or lack thereof, but you. Nothing posted on this thread violates the terms.

A HRM won't work for this for the same reason it wouldn't amount to enough calories to worry about. A HRM is made to measure steady state cardio exercise that significantly raises your heart rate for an extended period of time.

Oh. I just figured it'd be better/more accurate than pulling a number out of nowhere.

I would log it as something with similar physical output, ie light cleaning or whatever you think fits best.
  • (Although this sounds like a joke to me) why are you crawling for worms? Back when I used to fish we'd just dig holes... Sounds fishy. *rimshot*
  • Age old way of getting then without having to dig (don't want to tear up the yard). Run the sprinklers at dusk for about fifteen minutes and when it gets dark (currently around 8pm around here), the worms just pop out of the ground. I use a headlamp with a red light to spot them (they burrow back under ground if you use a white light- they dont respond at all to red) and just pull them the rest of the way out when I spot one. Much easier than digging and you can cover a really good amount of ground in a short time. I can score about a hundred an hour on a slow night and they replenish in numbers within about a week.
  • I'd respectfully disagree that "nothing on this thread violates the terms".

    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/welcome/guidelines

The site-wide community guidelines specifically say:

"a) Do not attack, mock, or otherwise insult others. You can respectfully disagree with the message or topic, but you cannot attack the messenger. This includes attacks against the user’s spelling or command of written English, or belittling a user for posting a duplicate topic."

When someone replies to me with "must.be.a.joke", that is clearly mocking and is, by definition, a violation. It is also exactly the opposite of what someone on this board needs: mocking only causes discouragement which directly affects motivation. If I can't even get a question answered by a complete stranger in a serious manner, then I have to ask, "what's the point in asking?" And if its simply not okay to even ask about weight loss, then where does a person turn to get answers or advice? If you have nowhere to turn, I'd argue that's pretty demotivating. Wouldn't you? That's not the case with me- I have plenty of motivation- but sometimes it's worthwhile to remind each other of why forums like this exist: to motivate and support; not to tear down and mock.

    Just my two cents :)

    I do appreciate the feedback...

Oh- and the grass portion of our yard is just over an acre- hence so many hours f collecting and such a good number if worms...
