This is a post just in case other men are in a similar situation if all else has failed check with the doc cause there could be another underlying problem ...we almost lost my hubby due to not knowing

My hubby (46 years old)

His shape was slim everywhere with a big round belly like a woman in late stages pregnancy. ...... His belly was solid as if the muscles had formed on the outside of the fat. we all thought it was diet and age related, I mean loads of men gain weight in this area in their mid 40's don't they :)

He had tried all sorts of exercise and diets but nothing worked,

Diet
He tired a normal balanced diet,
Then he attempted to cut out beer and alcohol altogether,
after that he tried to cut carbs

Exercise
everything from walking, running, core exercise, rowing, blah blah

nothing worked .....

he never made a conscious decision to go to the doctor about this, he was still putting it down to weight gain and age, then one day he started to feel really ill and after a week he had to get to a doc, he was then rushed into hospital and operated on the following morning ...

over the past several years his bowel and appendix had perforated and all the poison and toxins were pouring back into his stomach and surrounding area which in turn caused a large abscess (1/2 the size of a football by the time it was taken out) this in turn caused lots of swelling and the solid belly that he suffered from.

Now 6 weeks after his op his belly has almost gone and he is 2 stone lighter than he was pre op ... his shape now is a normal little belly that looks like it needs some muscle definition (but as hes just had major surgery. I guess that was to be expected even in the fittest of people)

I know this will possibly be a very rare case but I thought is worth posting ... cause you never know whats going on inside you. it might not always be a diet issue!

I'm glad he's okay! It is good to get checked out because there is more to the story than we realize sometimes.

Wow! Round belly aside he must feel a lot better overall just from getting rid of that festering infection. I can't imagine living with that for years.

now 12 weeks after his op he is back to fighting fit (almost), he does get tiered slighty easier than before but we have been told it could be up to a year for his body to settle down fully after such a major op.

hopefully any one out there who seems to have similar issues to my hubby can read this and go see a doc just to be sure ....

    stay safe everyone :)

he never made a conscious decision to go to the doctor about this,

I know from a male perspective that going to the Doctor is like admitting defeat for some reason. However, it's stories like these that I go get a yearly physical and get my blood work looked at. I suggest everyone else do the same if you can.

This place is called myFITNESSpal. To me being fit is similar to a hierarchy of needs. If you've got an illness that takes all your energy to survive..that needs to be your number one concern before messing with exercise and getting to things that we normall think of as fitness.

I'm so glad this was caught in time!

Tumors and abscess in the abdomen are actually a lot more common than people think. If something feels wrong, its a good idea to see a doctor.
