Carrageenan... for SCIENCE!

So, before bed last night, I had a bowl of cereal (which is rare for me). It was Crispix with Diamond Breeze Almond Milk. I've been lactose intolerant for well over a decade and have found Almond Milk to generally be ok -- albeit, I don't drink much milk period.
I woke up at midnight with your typical cramps and total pain of the gut EXACTLY like drinking milk would normally give me. Three hours later, let's just say I was well again.
I decided to take a gander at what could possibly have produced such foul stomach twisting occurrence. The only thing I can currently point to is that there is Carrageenan in the Diamond Breeze brand. I normally buy Silk, but the store was out... Silk doesn't apparently have Carrageenan.
Now, I typically will eat anything assuming it doesn't make me ill. I love me some gluten and artificial food dyes & preservatives. I mean... that's just the good stuff. Amirite?
So, for Science, I am going to eat the exact same bowl of Crispix this weekend with Silk Almond Milk instead of Diamond Breeze. If it results in the same gastrointestinal gag me with a spoon results, I'll videotape it. It'll be awesome. On the other hand, if I have no issues, I will be delighted to finally know what the hell causes such freaking pain. It's easy enough to avoid.
I'll save any more poop stories for later.

And, I know... TL;DR.

Sorry it made you feel that way. I have a similar reaction to eggs. :flowerforyou:0 -

There might be more going on than just carrageenan-but that definitely could be the culprit. I can't tolerate grains... nor can many people who continue to consume them in large daily amounts. What I eat definitely affects my health, profoundly and immediately. Lots of people here at MFP keep telling me how wrong I am, but I'll let my own experiments and results determine what is best for me, not somebody else's opinion that I should eat all foods (espcially processed foods) in "moderation". Yeah, cuz I didn't try to do that for 20 years already..... :huh:0

Do the test in the day time.
You don't need to be up most of the night!:flowerforyou:0 -
I don't have issues with regular milk, but when I drink almond if it's anything other than Silk I get stomach issues.0

Remember, it's only proven by science if you get consistent results.0

Bumping to see if we can get more scientific feedback.0

I work for The Cornucopia Institute (www.cornucopia.org), the nonprofit organization engaged in research and educational activities supporting the ecological principles and economic wisdom underlying sustainable and organic agriculture.
We have published a report on carrageenan at http://www.cornucopia.org/carrageenan-2013/, detailing the GI harm it causes. I have received a large number of emails, detailing how cutting out carrageenan has resolved mystery GI issues including bloating, explosive and frequent bowel movements and many other similar troubles. The report is based on the work of Dr. Joanne Tobacman at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, and is worth the read.
